Job description

A caregiver in this position performs and interprets tests at all complexity levels. This caregiver demonstrates an understanding of the theory and scientific principles of laboratory testing, as well as the technical, procedural and problem-solving aspects. A caregiver in this role maintains a questioning attitude, searching to find results to best determine patient care.

We will hire our clinical laboratory testing personnel in three different job titles, based on educational background:

  1. Medical Technologist
  2. Med Lab Technician
  3. Lab Technician

A caregiver in this role works evenings, 3:00pm-11:30pm.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  1. Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results.
  2. Maintain regulatory knowledge and awareness as it pertains to specific job duties.
  3. Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
  4. Assume responsibility for and take action regarding any quality control or quality assurance issues as it pertains to specific job duties.
  5. Maintain instruments and equipment in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
  6. Assume responsibility for good documentation practices and maintain clear and legible records.
  7. Perform proficiency testing in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) regulations i.e. analyze proficiency survey sample in the same manner as a patient specimens, no communication with other CLIA laboratories, complete record retention and accurate documentation and result reporting.
  8. Assume responsibility for participation in continuing education, professional development and required annual competency assessment.
  9. Follow the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  10. Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the General Supervisor, Technical Supervisor, Clinical Consultant, or Laboratory Director.
  11. May function as an educator and provides instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and the application of laboratory test protocols to students, employees, residents, etc.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal caregiver include:

  1. Associate Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology from an accredited institution OR Bachelor's degree in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science or Medical Technology from a four-year college or university OR meets the CLIA qualifications for high complexity testing personnel grandfathering clauses.
  2. Education outside of the United States requires diploma/transcripts translated into English and proof of foreign equivalency from an HHS approved agency or nationally recognized organization such as NACES (National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc.) or AICE (Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc.)

Preferred qualifications for the ideal caregiver include:

  1. Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT, MLT or MLS) or certification eligible from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT)

Physical Requirements:

  1. Physical demands include: Visual acuity to study specimens under a microscope.
  2. Ability to differentiate color, hue, saturation and tones.
  3. Fine motor skills and manual dexterity to handle specimens and lab equipment required to process specimens and repair equipment.
  4. May be required to stand for long periods of time.
  5. Light lifting may be required.
  6. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, biohazards, radioactive materials, etc.

Personal Protective Equipment:

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
