Brief Overview

Performs various clinical laboratory tests and procedures to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of diseases, following established standards, practices, and procedures. Exercises independent judgment, interprets and reports test results accurately and timely. Assists in supervising Medical Lab Technicians.

Responsibilities

1. Performs clinical lab tests and procedures, including specimen procurement, examination, and analysis, adhering to standards and considering safety and risk management. Exercises independent judgment in resolving clinical issues. Tests include hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, blood gases, cardiac testing, microbiology, waived testing, and more.
2. Prepares blood samples for diagnostic testing, determines specimen acceptability, and documents accordingly.
3. Processes patient specimens, analyzes and reports results, performs quality control, and maintains accurate records.
4. Utilizes computer systems for data entry and retrieval, interacts courteously with patients and staff, and maintains communication regarding test statuses.
5. Maintains equipment, recognizes malfunctions, and assists in evaluating new techniques.
6. Ensures confidentiality, complies with regulations, and maintains a safe, clean laboratory environment.
7. Supervises and provides instruction to support personnel and students, participates in training and performance improvement activities.
8. Provides coverage for absences, including night, weekend, holiday, on-call, and callback shifts.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an approved Medical Technology program.
• Qualified to work with diverse patient populations as dictated by specialty.
• Medical Technologist licensure through the State of TN within 120 days.
• Experience in patient care from an approved program.

Physical Demands

• Standing, walking, sitting, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and eye/hand/foot coordination, with varying frequencies as specified.
