Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides support for clinical activities by performing and interpreting moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA '88.

Position: Medical Technologist II

Department: Chemistry Lab

Schedule: Day Shift, 40 hours, rotating weekends

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

  1. Perform moderate and high complexity tests after specialized training and experience, and interpret results.
  2. Serve as a resource for test interpretation for laboratory users, consistent with training and knowledge level.
  3. Review testing and procedures performed by staff to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, as qualified by the section supervisor.
  4. Prioritize STAT and routine samples appropriately.
  5. Ensure accurate specimen identification and labeling according to SOPs.
  6. Assess sample appropriateness for requested tests, seek approval for deviations, and document in LIS.
  7. Perform testing within specified time frames based on specimen viability.
  8. Address and document issues with mislabeled or inappropriate specimens, following departmental policies.
  9. Communicate specimen or patient identification issues to relevant laboratory sections.
  10. Store samples properly according to SOPs.
  11. Process specimens within established time limits.
  12. Accession tests as required by SOPs.
  13. Maintain instruments and equipment as per policies.
  14. Identify and report instrument or methodology problems promptly.
  15. Perform QC procedures and evaluate QC data.
  16. Recognize and report technical and operational discrepancies.
  17. Conduct analytic testing and validate results according to policies.
  18. Maintain accurate, legible records of test performance.
  19. Review patient results, investigate discrepancies, and notify supervisors as needed.
  20. Transcribe results into LIS accurately, including critical values and corrections.
  21. Add coded comments and review LIS codes for transcription accuracy.
  22. Notify relevant personnel of Critical Alert Values and document accordingly.
  23. Maintain proficiency in LIS functions and document reagent and material usage.
  24. Manage blood inventories if applicable.
  25. Complete all work by shift end, including hand-offs.
  26. Assist other sections and participate in QA/QI activities.
  27. Complete competency documentation and continuing education requirements.
  28. Participate in teaching and departmental committees as requested.
  29. Communicate professionally and cooperate with staff.
  30. Report safety hazards and participate in safety training.
  31. Adhere to confidentiality policies and safety procedures.
  32. Keep work area neat and stocked, and notify management of supply needs.
  33. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field, including clinical internship, or in an applied science (Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry).

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Certification by ASCP, NCA, or equivalent preferred. Equivalent agency certification requires a science degree and successful examination.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years in a clinical chemistry laboratory for those with a Bachelor's in Chemistry, Biology, or Biochemistry; one year for those with a Bachelor's in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Knowledge of clinical laboratory science and standards for high complexity testing as per CLIA.
  • Ability to perform and interpret highly complex tests, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, and review testing.
  • Compliance with regulatory requirements (JCAHO, CAP, FDA, AABB).
  • Manual dexterity for specimen preparation and equipment operation.
  • Proficiency in English for communication with physicians and team members.
