About DMC University Laboratories

DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system serving the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, it includes Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, rapid response hospital labs, Centralized Stat Lab, Blood Bank Lab, and a comprehensive outreach infrastructure with patient service centers, ambulatory labs, marketing, courier, and billing services. Our service area covers Southeast Michigan, offering over 1,000 tests, including high-end specialties, with less than 1% sent to outside labs. We also provide reference lab services to other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and beyond.

Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs quantitative and qualitative tests on patient specimens according to standard procedures. Responsibilities include analyzing test results, preparing samples, calculating findings, maintaining records, and preparing reagents and media. The role also involves processing various specimens, reviewing and reporting results, maintaining equipment, troubleshooting, and supporting other laboratory staff.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, or graduation from an approved school of medical technology, or equivalent military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489. Alternatively, qualified at the Medical Technologist level by passing a HHS exam before 2/28/92, meeting CLIA high complexity testing criteria.
  • Prefer 6 months to 1 year of experience as a medical laboratory technologist or clinical laboratory scientist in an acute care setting.
  • Must be registered or eligible for registration with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT, or CSMLS) within 12 months of hire. Non-US trained personnel must complete an equivalency evaluation within 30 days of hire. State licensure as required.

  3. Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate equipment.
  4. Ability to closely examine specimens.
