DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system providing services to the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. It offers a test menu of over 1,000 tests, including high-end specialty tests, with less than 1% sent to outside reference laboratories. DMCUL also provides reference laboratory services to other healthcare systems in Southeastern Michigan and out-of-state facilities.

Summary Description

Under general supervision, performs quantitative and qualitative laboratory tests on patient specimens according to standard procedures. Analyzes test results, prepares samples, calculates findings, and maintains records. Prepares solutions, reagents, media, stains, and materials used in testing. Processes and tests various laboratory specimens, reviews and reports results, and maintains laboratory instrumentation and equipment. Acts as a resource to other laboratory personnel.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree from an approved college or university and/or graduate of an accredited school of medical technology, or equivalent such as military training as defined by 42 CFR 493.1489, or qualified at the Medical Technologist level by achieving a satisfactory grade on a HHS examination prior to 2/28/92 (42 CFR 493.1491). Meets CLIA regulations for High Complexity testing.
  • Prefer 6 months to 1 year of medical laboratory technologist or clinical laboratory scientist experience in an acute care facility.
  • Required: Registered or registry eligible in accordance with an approved certifying agency (ASCP, NCA, AMT, or CSMLS within 12 months of hire). Non-US trained personnel must complete an equivalency evaluation within 30 days of hire. Licensure as required by State.
Skills Required
  • Analytical ability to interpret and analyze test results.
  • Effective interpersonal skills for working with physicians and staff.
  • Manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to closely examine specimens.
