Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Performs accurate and reproducible results of routine and complex testing as ordered by the physician.
• Manages quality control: evaluates values, documents errors, and maintains logs.
• Maintains and troubleshoots automated equipment; reports malfunctions to supervisor.
• Recognizes critical results; notifies ordering physician with complete documentation in LIS.
• Operates LIS and related software; stays current with system updates.
• Participates in proficiency testing and QA programs.
• Ensures specimen integrity and proper handling to prevent compromised results.
• Willingness to take on additional duties as required.

Education

Associate or Bachelor in Medical Technology

State of Florida Medical Technologist license with specialties (Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology)

Essential Functions

• Performs accurate and reproducible results of routine and complex manual and automated testing as ordered by the physician producing results in a timely manner
• Performs and understands quality control programs including evaluation of values, documentation of errors and corrective action, and the maintenance of records in the appropriate logs
• Performs and records scheduled equipment maintenance, troubleshooting of equipment problems, and provides immediate notification to department supervisor in the event of any malfunctions
• Recognizes normal and life-threatening results and follows protocol for notification of results to the ordering physician along with complete and legible documentation on worksheets and in the LIS
• Proficient operation of the LIS and other computer related programs. Maintains competency with changes and upgrades to each system
• Participates in Proficiency Testing programs in addition to other departmental quality assurance programs
• Comprehends the importance of specimen integrity and recognizes any events that may compromise the quality of testing and reporting of results.
• Consent to assume other duties as required by department

Requirements

Required Education and Experience: Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or related Science degree along with the successful completion of an approved formal training program in Medical Technology.

Preferred Education and Experience: Experience in a clinical laboratory setting involving the analysis of blood, tissue and body fluids utilizing automated equipment and specialized instrumentation while performing numerous complicated tests simultaneously and accurately interpreting the results.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications: Active State of Florida license as a Medical Technologist with licensure in the following specialties: Hematology, Chemistry, Serology, Microbiology, Molecular Pathology. Registry with either ASCP, AMT, or AAB preferred.
