Responsibilities include performing routine testing per procedures, maintaining instrument readiness, troubleshooting as needed, and upholding safety and confidentiality standards in alignment with department policies.

  • Accessions and distributes laboratory specimens according to protocol.
  • Label specimens correctly and identify those not meeting lab labeling standards.
  • Identify inappropriate specimens (e.g., hemolyzed, QNS) for testing.
  • Cancel inappropriate specimens using proper documentation and reorder tests as needed.
  • Distribute specimens promptly to ensure established turnaround times.

Job Summary

To assist in the operation of the Laboratory sections.

Accountabilities
  • 1. Properly accessions and distributes Laboratory specimens.
  • a. Associate knows correct specimen requirements and how to access the correct specimen requirements for all Laboratory testing.
  • b. Associate knows the proper labeling requirements for specimens and can recognize those specimens, which do not meet the Laboratory standards for labeling.
  • c. Associate recognizes specimens that are inappropriate for testing (hemolysis, QNS).
  • d. Associate knows how to cancel specimens, inappropriate for testing, using correct documentation.
  • e. Associate can competently reorder tests that have been cancelled, ensuring that the correct patient account, the correct test, and the correct collection date and time is utilized.
  • f. Associate promptly distributes specimens to the appropriate department so established TAT goals are met.
  • 2. Performs established Laboratory testing procedures.
  • a. Demonstrates ability to independently perform all Laboratory testing as stated in procedure manuals.
  • b. Associate prioritizes workload works efficiently and makes full use of work time.
  • c. Associate follows established TATs for routine, urgent and STAT testing.
  • d. Associate follows all established policies and procedures for Quality Control testing.
  • e. Demonstrates ability to review QC, implement corrective action, and report exceptions
  • f. Associate demonstrates ability to perform routine instrument maintenance, calibrations, and basic troubleshooting of equipment. Knows when to call service.
  • g. Associate judiciously uses supplies and reagents. Notifies supervisor when supplies are running low.
  • h. Associate maintains an orderly workstation and communicates so that workflow between shifts is uninterrupted.
  • 3. Interprets Laboratory tests results to ensure quality patient care.
  • a. Associate's work is accurate and error-free, without edited results.
  • b. Associate can recognize abnormal results and follows established protocol for calling the physician/nursing unit.
  • c. Associate demonstrates ability to identify and solve problems, knowing when to confer with the Lead/Senior Technologist.
  • d. Associate can troubleshoot out of range quality control, specimen requirement/integrity issues, and instrument malfunctions.
  • e. Demonstrates critical thinking skills in order to interpret results.
  • 4. Promotes patient safety by compliance with Organizational/Departmental policies and procedures.
  • a. Maintains confidentiality of customers and associates at all times.
  • b. Timely completion of yearly competencies, mandatory job requirements (RAHE, Fire/Safety CE, BLS, Background Clearance, Fingerprinting, etc.) and Continuing Education.
  • c. Keeps abreast of changes and exhibits a supportive professional attitude.
  • d. Keeps abreast of and complies with contents in Laboratory Manual, DH Associate Manual, Infection Control Manual, Chemical/Safety Hygiene Manual, Computer and each Departmental Policy and Procedure Manuals.
