Job description

Location: Jackson North Medical Center-160 NW 170th St, North Miami Beach, FL 33169

Department: Clinical Lab

Status: Per Diem

Shift: 11pm to 7:30am

Summary

Medical Technologist 1 is professional technology work in the performance of diagnostic tests and procedures in the clinical laboratory of a county medical facility. Employees in this classification are professionally trained medical technologists responsible for performing various diagnostic analyses, morphologic studies and quantitative and qualitative determinations on specimen samples of blood, urine, cerebral spinal and other body fluids and products in accordance with recognized scientific theory, principles and techniques. Emphasis of the work is on independent judgment in determining accurate test results and recognition of critical values. Supervision may be exercised over Laboratory Aides, Assistants and Technicians, Medical Technology Students and Laboratory Clerks as required. Supervision is received from a professional superior who reviews results for professional quality and assists as abnormal laboratory results are found.

Responsibilities

  1. Produces accurate results/outcomes according to age-specific standard operating procedures.
  2. Matches the patient identifying information on specimens with the work document without clerical/data entry errors, including omissions.
  3. Demonstrates the ability to coordinate simultaneous series of procedures with accuracy.
  4. Consults supervisor for additional assignments and follows them to completion.
  5. Completes patient and quality control procedures within defined time limits.
  6. Interprets patient and quality control samples or procedures determining whether they are abnormal or incorrect, taking appropriate action according to protocol.
  7. Recognizes and documents efforts to resolve equipment and/or procedural problems and notifies supervisor when necessary.
  8. Participates actively in QA/QI programs of the department.
  9. Completes routine tasks without direct supervision.
  10. Oversees and/or performs preventive maintenance and documents corrective actions taken.
  11. Prioritizes workload in response to STAT requests according to protocol.
  12. Learns new procedures and/or assignments within a mutually agreed upon time frame.
  13. Maintains an appropriate inventory of supplies, keeping working supplies stocked.
  14. Adapts to modification of work assignments and, when requested, is willing to adjust personal schedule for the benefit of patient care.
  15. Demonstrates a concern for cleanliness of self and work area and practices infection control for the protection of patients, co-workers, and self.
  16. Assumes ownership of issues and follows them to resolution.
  17. Maintains current knowledge of written revisions in procedures as well as advances in the profession.
  18. Offers innovative solutions to allow for efficient and effective delivery of laboratory service.
  19. Maintains neat, legible and organized written work documents with appropriate dates and initials.
  20. Follows departmental policies and procedures at all times.
  21. Monitors pending work and critical values as per protocol.
  22. Organizes and performs work according to procedure manual, ensuring workflow can be followed by other personnel.
  23. Communicates regularly with subordinates and supervisor.
  24. Provides initial non-technical resources in resolving routine problems.
  25. Demonstrates practical decision-making skills.
  26. Demonstrates leadership traits such as empathy, creativity and fairness.
  27. Assures employee empowerment and encourages employee participation.
  28. Prepares and records proficiency testing or performs other specialized tasks according to protocol.
  29. Takes charge of the department in the absence of the supervisors.
  30. Assists in providing adequate staffing.
  31. Performs instruments preventive maintenance procedures, on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis as outlined in procedure manual.
  32. Performs A.M. start-up and/or P.M. start-up procedures at the beginning of each shift.
  33. Regularly inspects all instruments and ensures that equipment is in proper working condition, so the results indicated are accurate.
  34. Performs quality control with each test along with instrument checks to ensure the accuracy of results reported.
  35. Verifies the name of the patient in specimens both labels against the name and test ordered in worksheets.
  36. Ensures that test results correlate with the diagnosis.
  37. Performs scheduled tests on days to be done.
  38. Files Q.C. and maintenance records promptly; able to retrieve information within 15 minutes upon request.
  39. Participates in performing CAP surveys and completes them in a timely manner.
  40. Checks temperatures of refrigerators, freezers, incubators, and room temperatures, logging each day reading in appropriate daily chart.
  41. Assists in weekly inventory, ordering supplies as necessary, and ensuring that proper supplies are on hand at all times in the section.
  42. Performs venipuncture or bleeding time accurately, thoroughly explaining the procedure to the patient.
  43. Follows instructions when reconstituting controls.
  44. Logs reagents received in log book, writing date received, lot number and expiration date.
  45. Makes sure that specimens are at room temperature before starting any procedures.
  46. Ensures to put supplies away following manufactured specifications and as soon as they arrive to avoid spoilage of reagents, rotating stock on shelves.
  47. Reports panic values to R.N. and to the patient's physician, recording name and results for panic values and correctly documenting in the computer.
  48. Completes all work procedures during the work shift without sacrificing the quality of work.
  49. Does not allow specimens to stand for a period of time that would reduce their suitability for testing.
  50. Performs stat orders as requested; consistently reports stat results within one hour from collection or as soon as possible.
  51. Completes work left from other shifts, striving to reduce any hold-over test to be reported as results are available.
  52. Reports any incomplete assignments or procedures to next shift to ensure continuity of procedures.
  53. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise).
  54. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

Associate's degree in related field is required. Bachelor's degree in related field is strongly preferred.

Skill

Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Ability to exercise sound and independent judgment. Credentials

Valid Florida license as a Medical Technologist in area of specialty is required. ASCP Certification is preferred.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Environmental Conditions - Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast-paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. May also be exposed to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-Ray, chemical exposures and other potential hazards. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
