RWJBarnabas Health is seeking a Medical Technologist for the Lab NB Microbiology in New Brunswick, NJ. The MLS performs complex microbiology testing to aid diagnosis and patient care, upholding quality and safety standards.

Requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related field; ASCP MLS/MT certification preferred; and at least 1 year of microbiology experience or graduate rotations. Day shift, rotating weekends.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, or related field.
ASCP MLS/MT certification preferred; MLS-ASCP or MT-ASCP or equivalent.
One year of experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory or new graduates with rotations considered.

Responsibilities

Performs microbiological testing on a variety of specimens (blood, urine, respiratory, wound, stool) including cultures, smears, PCR, and antigen testing.
Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation with quality control and calibration procedures.
Maintains LIS for specimen tracking, results entry, and documentation.
Participates in quality assurance programs and proficiency testing.
Follows safety, infection control, and biosafety protocols and uses PPE.
Trains new staff and students; communicates results with physicians and infection preventionists.

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Scientist MLS in the Microbiology Laboratory performs complex laboratory testing on clinical specimens to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases,

The MLS applies professional knowledge, technical skills, and established protocols to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely test results,

This role contributes directly to patient care and supports infection prevention efforts through quality microbiological analysis,

Qualifications

Required:

Bachelors degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Microbiology, or related field

Preferred

Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist by ASCP MLS-ASCP or MT-ASCP or equivalent,

One year of experience in a clinical microbiology laboratory

New graduates with microbiology clinical rotations will be considered,

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Performs microbiological testing on a variety of specimens e,g, blood, urine, respiratory, wound, stool, including cultures, smears, PCR, and antigen testing,

Work in other core-lab areas as directed,

Conducts Gram stains, acid-fast stains, fungal stains, and parasitology testing as required,

Identifies bacterial, fungal, and other microbial pathogens using manual and automated methods e,g,MALDI-TOF, Phoenix, Biofire, etc,

Performs antimicrobial susceptibility testing and interprets results according to CLSI guidelines,

Reviews and validates test results, identifying and troubleshooting issues and unusual findings,

Operates and maintains laboratory instrumentation, including quality control and calibration procedures,

Utilizes the Laboratory Information System LIS for specimen tracking, result entry, and documentation,

Participates in laboratory quality assurance programs, including proficiency testing and internal audits,

Follows all safety, infection control, and biosafety protocols, including proper handling of infectious agents and use of PPE,

Assists in training new staff and students, and participates in continuing education activities,

Communicates effectively with physicians, infection preventionists, and other healthcare professionals regarding critical or unusual results,

Assists in maintaining laboratory inventory by restocking supplies and preparing media or reagents as directed,

Skills And Abilities

In-depth knowledge of microbiological techniques, organism identification, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing,

Strong analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills,

Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team,

Proficient with laboratory equipment, LIS, and Microsoft Office applications,

Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and communication skills,

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a clinical laboratory environment with frequent exposure to infectious agents, odors, and chemical reagents,

Must be able to stand for extended periods, perform repetitive tasks, and lift up to 25-50 lbs,

PPE required e,g, lab coat, gloves, eye protection,
