Job summary

MyMichigan Health in Standish, MI is seeking a Technical Specialist to guide and educate staff, ensure compliance with procedures, and optimize workflow across core laboratory functions. This role provides input on procedures, monitors staff performance, and helps drive efficient operations.

The candidate will lead cytology, histology, and high-complexity testing activities, participate in training, and support SOP updates.

Job description

Summary

This position serves as a technical resource person providing guidance, ongoing education and training to employees of the department, under limited supervision. The role provides input into the development of procedures and protocols, ensures compliance, and interprets procedural intent as requested and/or required. It monitors the workflow and staff performance to ensure compliance with established policies and procedures, guides the daily activities of the group to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations, maintains workflow efficiency and turnaround expectations, and provides input to evaluate staff performance, which includes performance reviews and disciplinary actions.

Responsibilities
  1. Clinical Laboratory Technical Specialist: Works within the department to analyze and process biological specimens, organize workload and set‑up test procedures. Monitors productivity and workflow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile.
  2. Cytology Technical Specialist: Screens, interprets and signs out negative reports for gynecological cytology preparations; processes, screens, and interprets non‑gynecological cytology preparations; assists clinicians with fine‑needle (FNA) biopsies and prepares screens; works within the Cytology and Histology departments to accomplish daily work. Monitors productivity and workflow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile.
  3. Histology Technical Specialist: Processes pathology samples by embedding, cutting and immunohistochemical staining. Assists pathologists with frozen and gross duties as needed. Performs all duties listed in the Histotechnologist job description. Works within the Cytology and Histology departments to accomplish daily work. Monitors productivity and workflow patterns to achieve turnaround times in the 90th percentile.
  4. Evaluation (20%) evaluates appropriateness of patient and quality control results and enters them into the laboratory information system, strictly following the critical notification policy when results meet stated criteria.
  5. Inventory Management (20%) maintains inventory and reorders reagents, stocks shelves, disposes of biohazards and chemicals in a safe manner, and maintains and troubleshoots instruments.
  6. Technical Resource (20%) serves in matters related to equipment: quality control, calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting and inventory; routinely provides input for updates to standard operating procedures; ensures compliance with regulations; provides practical, hands‑on training for new employees and when procedural changes occur.
  7. Additional Duties monitors compliance with supply and usage guidelines; maintains departmental inventory of supplies and requests; assists the Manager to improve department performance; provides input for scheduling and staffing needs; may provide leadership in the absence of the Manager; performs other duties as assigned.
High Complexity Test Oversight

For High Complexity Tests, this position may serve as a General Supervisor (CLIA Definition). For Moderately Complexity Testing, it may serve as a Technical Consultant (TC) defined in Laboratory Policy, to ensure:

  • Remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications; patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system functions properly.
  • Orientation is provided to all testing personnel.
  • Annual personnel performance evaluations and documentation of testing personnel performance competency.
Certifications and Licensures

Credential: MLT – Medical Lab Technician (ASCP/AMT/AAB). Equivalent Experience: MT/MLT – Medical Technologist/Technician (ASCP). Alternative national laboratory science certification may be accepted for employees hired to MyMichigan prior to 01/01/2025 or to an acquired facility prior to integration date. Non‑certified employees must actively pursue an acceptable route to ASCP certification, with time offered directed by the ASCP Board of Certification.

Qualifications

Credential: MT – Medical Technologist (ASCP/AMT/AAB). Must hold and maintain an active, national certification in the field of medical laboratory sciences or technology within 12 months of hire or transfer through ASCP, AMT or AAB. ASCPi certification is considered equivalent to ASCP for international applicants and does not require subsequent ASCP certification if maintained. Fingerprinting: FINGERPRIN.

Required Education

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Medical Technology (MT), or a bachelor's degree in a science or health‑related field with national certification (ASCP, AMT, or AAB). The field of specialization and expertise required may cause consideration of other certifications issued by ASCP, AMT, or AAB.

Experience, Training and Skills

Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group; 2‑3 years progressively responsible experience as an MT, MLT, CT or HT; basic computer skills and knowledge; written and interpersonal skills to communicate with individuals and groups, including those at all levels.

Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
  • Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief and death.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitutes.
  • Ability to move freely about the facility with or without assistance and perform all required job functions.
  • Vision and hearing, with or without assisted devices.
  • Frequent postural changes (standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching).
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens and requirement to follow MyMichigan Health blood‑borne pathogen and TB testing.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks, work independently, maintain attendance and stay alert.
  • Dexterity required for handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling.
  • Light physical demand; occasional lifting of 11‑20 lbs. 0‑33% of the workday; frequent lifting of 10 lbs. 34‑66% of the workday; walking, standing, pushing, pulling of arm/leg controls.
