Summary
This position will be responsible for the overall management of a specific section (as defined below), which includes recommendations on hiring, performance review counseling and disciplinary actions of staff. Under limited supervision, directs and supervises assigned personnel and daily activities to ensure efficient and uninterrupted operations. Monitors and assesses section performance to ensure established targets are achieved through process‑improvement initiatives. This position is responsible for being knowledgeable in all aspects of the department and is competent to perform the tasks required by members of the team. This position serves as a technical resource person across all laboratory sites and facilitates guidance, ongoing education, and training of staff. It also assists the Laboratory Director to develop and monitor financial budgets, ensures compliance, and provides interpretation of procedural intent as requested or required.
Responsibilities
- HR issues: coaching, counseling of employees, adherence to policies and procedures, education of staff on customer service skills, completing JPRs, knowledge of Kronos schedules and approving time.
- Applicant screening and new employee hiring; supervises, coordinates, and participates in work activities for entire department; delegates responsibility and authority; develops goals and objectives for personnel to assure continued growth and improvement.
- Communications: keep staff informed of changes, coordinate policies, organize staff meetings, assist with presentations, attend monthly leadership meetings, manage effective communication with staff persons having area responsibilities.
- Compliance: review CLIA, CAP, Joint Commission, AABB, MDCH, OSHA guidelines; assist in creating and revising policies; prepare for inspections and meet regulatory surveyors.
- Other duties: ensure proficiency samples distributed and tested, develop and implement strategic priorities, prioritize improvement initiatives, introduce new tests, ensure action plans achieve goals, collaborate with departmental process teams, evaluate statistical performance on quality and financial metrics, develop operating and capital budgets, oversee procurement and meeting personnel needs.
- Moderate and High Complexity Tests: serve as Technical Consultant or Technical Supervisor per CLIA definition ensuring appropriate test method selection, method verification, proficiency testing participation, corrective action plans, quality assessment and control programs, staff competence, and procedure manual availability.

Experience, Training, and Skills
- Two to four years supervisory experience in a clinical laboratory or equivalent experience.
- Leadership skills needed to effectively direct a group.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge.
- Knowledge of basic marketing techniques and financial analysis.
- Written and interpersonal skills for effective communication.
- Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing; OSHA training annually.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Typical Working Conditions
- Exposure to stressful situations, including public contact, trauma, grief, death.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment including latex.
