Job summary

  • Exhibits knowledge of the quality control program for each instrument and test.

Department: Scotland Memorial Hospital - Lab Status: Full time Shift: 3rd (United States of America) Schedule Details/Additional Information: 2 – 5 Years Generalist Experience In A Hospital Laboratory Preferred at Hire: ASCP Registration



  • 1. Exhibits ability to perform duties in assigned Departments

  • 2. Exhibits ability to work well with computer systems as required for laboratory processes/workflows. Reads emails and new policies and procedures in a timely manner and responds appropriately.

  • 3. Exhibits the ability to organize and plan work, as well as the ability to make decisions with independent judgment, including calling critical values to the appropriate provider and documenting \"read back\" actions in the electronic health record.

  • 4. Performs duties per protocol and free of errors, including continuous review of the electronic health record to ensure completion of all tests in a timely manner.

  • 5. Notifies Section leaders, Chief Technologist, Laboratory Director, and/or Pathologist of unresolved problems in a timely manner.

  • 6. Exibits knowledge of the quality control program for each instrument and test and complies with all requirements.

  • 7. Exhibits knowledge of instrument reagent and supply requirements and uses reagents and supplies economically and according to manufacturer's specifications.

  • 8. Actively participates in inventory control by notifying Section Leader and/or Chief Technologist when inventory supplies fall below two-week supply level or when opening the last kit. Participates in efforts to reduce costs.

  • 9. Carefully reviews/verifies results prior to approval and release to providers.

  • 10. Performs annual competencies and Proficiency Testing in a timely manner and maintains passing grades.

  • 11. Exhibits working knowledge of Corporate and Laboratory Compliance Plans and adheres to compliance intent.

  • 12. Assists in the testing and implementation of new instruments and/or procedures.

  • 13. Orients, mentors, and teaches clinical laboratory methods, procedures, and techniques to new technical staff and students as appropriate.

  • 14. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

  • 15. Age Specific Competency: Staff member will have knowledge of human growth and development through the life span of the patient and have the ability to meet the needs of and provide the care to these patients. The age categories to be included are: Neonatal/infant 0 - 11 months; Pediatrics 1 - 12 years; Adolescence 13 - 17 years; Young adult/adult 18 - 64 years; Adult/middle-age 65 - 79 years; Geriatric 80+ years.

  • 16. Exhibits effective communication skills (writing, listening, reading comprehension and talking) so that misinterpretation of test results, reports, and/or instruction will not occur.

  • 17. Operates equipment (including maintenance and troubleshooting) according to laboratory and manufacturer protocol and documents appropriately. Notifies Patient Care Areas in cases of instrument downtime in a timely manner.
