Job description

Summary

This position is located in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the VA Central Iowa Health Care System in Des Moines, IA. The technician performs phlebotomy in various hospital areas, including emergency, inpatient, outpatient, and extended care facilities. The incumbent also handles computer tasks, customer service, instruction, and communication duties.

Qualifications

English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), proficiency in basic written and spoken English is required for direct patient care roles. The position requires experience in performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients, which is a Selective Placement Factor and a minimum qualification.

Experience and Education: Applicants must have six months of general and six months of specialized experience related to laboratory work or an educational background including coursework in chemistry or biological sciences, plus relevant training. Documentation of education and experience is required.

Physical Requirements: Manual dexterity, hand/eye coordination, physical activity including walking, reaching, bending, standing, and occasional lifting up to 20 pounds.

Duties

• Performs blood collection using venipunctures, arterial punctures, and finger sticks with minimal failures and patient discomfort.
• Demonstrates skills in specimen procurement and preservation until testing.
• Follows standard operating procedures for specimen collection.
• Independently resolves specimen procurement issues.
• Identifies tests requiring special handling and performs proper collection.
• Initiates emergency care procedures for adverse patient reactions.
• Maintains phlebotomy supplies and reports shortages.
• Assists patients with laboratory check-in, obtains pre-analytical information, and provides excellent customer service.
• Communicates test order issues to relevant staff.
• Answers laboratory phone inquiries and forwards calls appropriately.
• Provides consistent information to customers per policies.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Position details: Schedule Monday-Friday, with weekends and holidays as needed, from 5:30 am to 2:00 pm. Recruitment and relocation incentives are not authorized. The position is drug-test designated; refusal to test results in denial of employment.
