Job summary

Lehigh Valley Health Network is hiring a Medical Laboratory Technician to perform high, moderate, or waived laboratory testing across departments. You will operate advanced instrumentation, verify results, and monitor quality control with minimal supervision.

The role includes training new staff, adhering to SOPs, and maintaining equipment. A qualified candidate holds an associate degree or CLIA-qualified diploma and demonstrates punctuality, reliability, and basic English proficiency.

Qualifications

• Associate's Degree as a medical laboratory technician or Specialized Diploma meeting CLIA grandfathered MLT regulations.
• Less than 1 year of experience or a clinical laboratory internship.
• Demonstrated technical skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific documents.
• Ability to read, understand, and speak basic English.
• Demonstrated ability to use/learn the computer system, word processing, e-mail, and applicable software programs.
• Demonstrated dependability/flexibility in meeting scheduling needs of the department, unit, and hospital.
• Ability to apply common mathematical skills.
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Responsibilities

• Performs any high complexity, moderate complexity, or waived laboratory testing in the assigned testing department. Utilizes advanced clinical laboratory instrumentation and methodologies according to departmental standard operating procedures.
• Confirms, verifies, and reports the results of this testing independently exercising broad independent judgment.
• Monitors results for reasonableness and critical values.
• Conducts and evaluates established quality control per departmental standard operating procedures.
• Troubleshoots and reports to management any unacceptable quality control before reporting patient results.
• Performs required departmental preventative maintenance per standard operating procedures.
• Recognizes and corrects instrument or procedural malfunctions within the scope of the standard operating procedures and records troubleshooting activities.
• Provides clinical orientation and/or training of new employees/students.

Physical Demands

Lift and carry 40-50 lbs. Examples: Push/pull patients on bed, stretcher (requires 29 lbs. push force), lateral transfers up to 50 lbs. of the patient's weight. Frequent to continuous standing/walking. Patient transporters can walk 8-10 miles per shift. *Patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
