Job Description:

This position may be filled as either Medical Support Assistant or Certified Medical Assistant I, II, or III - depending on experience, expertise, and qualifications.

See below for minimum qualifications for either level.

The Medical Support Assistant works alongside Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers to provide direct patient care according to state and federal guidelines. This position plays an important role in the ambulatory setting by performing clinical and administrative duties and helping patients feel at ease and understand provider instructions.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care by taking vitals, patient history, referrals, and patient phone messages under supervision.
  • Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate.
  • Contributes to patient assessment and re-assessment.
  • Monitors and documents patient status.
  • Manages large call volume with excellent telephone etiquette.
  • Organizes workflow to meet patient needs promptly.
  • May retrieve and transport instruments and supplies.
  • Exposes to hazards including infections, blood, body fluids, electrical equipment, chemicals; must follow standard precautions.
  • Responsible for stocking exam rooms, inventory, and supplies.
  • Coordinates scheduling with healthcare professionals and facilities.
  • Assists with procedures, maintains sterile fields, and labels specimens.
  • Gathers and documents patient condition, lab values, pain levels, education needs, nutritional status, and potential complications.
  • Performs cleaning, sterilization, and high-level disinfection of scopes and instruments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements Medical Support Assistant:

Education: High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience: 0-3 years in patient care preferred.

License/Certification: BLS certification required upon hire.

Minimum Requirements Certified Medical Assistant I:

Education: High School Diploma or GED; Medical Assistant Program preferred.

Experience: 0-3 years preferred.

License/Certification: BLS certification required; plus one of the following certifications:

  • AMT Medical Assistant
  • Registered Medical Assistant - American Association of Medical Personnel
  • Registered Medical Assistant - American Allied Health
  • AAMA Certified Medical Assistant
  • National HealthCareer Association Certified Medical Assistant
  • NCCT National Certified Medical Assistant
  • National Association for Health Professionals Registered Medical Assistant
Minimum Requirements Certified Medical Assistant II:

Education: High School Diploma or GED; Medical Assistant Program preferred.

Experience: 3-5 years in patient care required.

License/Certification: BLS certification required; plus one of the above certifications.

Minimum Requirements Certified Medical Assistant III:

Education: High School Diploma or GED; Medical Assistant Program preferred.

Experience: 5+ years in patient care required.

License/Certification: BLS certification required; plus one of the above certifications.

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.

  • Ability to observe and gather information from relevant sources.
