In this role, you will protect patient safety and support infection prevention by ensuring surgical instruments and medical supplies are properly decontaminated, sterilized, and ready for use across inpatient and outpatient clinical services serving American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

Qualifications

  • Experience in sterile processing or central supply in a clinical or hospital setting.
  • Knowledge of sterile processing standards (TJC, CMS, AAAHC).
  • Certification in Sterile Processing (CRCST) as required by the facility.
  • Ability to operate sterilization equipment and read indicators.
  • Valid driver license.
  • Meet health screening and immunization requirements for federal facility.

Responsibilities

  • Perform full-cycle SPD operations including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and supplies.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment per standards.
  • Inspect, assemble, and package instrument trays and procedure sets.
  • Maintain documentation and sterilization records for compliance and QA.
  • Apply PPE and follow safety/infection control protocols in SPD areas.
  • Coordinate supply inventory and distribution to support clinical operations.

Job description

Akicita Federal is hiring Medical Supply Technicians to deliver critical sterile processing services for the Indian Health Service's Northern Navajo Medical Center in Shiprock, NM. In this role, you will protect patient safety and support infection prevention by ensuring surgical instruments and medical supplies are properly decontaminated, sterilized, and ready for use across inpatient and outpatient clinical services serving American Indian and Alaska Native communities. This is meaningful, hands‑on work at the heart of a high‑volume federal healthcare facility.

  • Perform full-cycle Sterile Processing Department (SPD) operations including decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of surgical instruments and medical supplies
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment in compliance with The Joint Commission (TJC), CMS, and AAAHC standards
  • Inspect, assemble, and package instrument trays and procedure sets according to established facility protocols
  • Maintain accurate documentation and sterilization records in support of regulatory compliance and quality assurance
  • Apply proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow all safety and infection control protocols in the decontamination and sterile processing areas
  • Coordinate supply inventory and distribution to support uninterrupted clinical operations across the Northern Navajo Medical Center service units
  • Demonstrate cultural awareness and respectful communication when interacting with IHS staff, patients, and visitors in a Native American healthcare environment

$70,720 - $74,880 a year

  • Demonstrated experience performing sterile processing or central supply technician duties in a clinical or hospital setting
  • Working knowledge of sterile processing standards and best practices (TJC, CMS, or AAAHC guidelines)
  • Certification in Sterile Processing (e.g., CRCST or equivalent) as required by the facility
  • Ability to operate sterilization equipment and correctly interpret biological and chemical indicator results
  • Valid driver's license (motor vehicle operator's license required)
  • Ability to meet health screening and immunization requirements as a condition of employment in a federal healthcare facility
  • Proficiency in basic information technology skills sufficient to use IHS electronic health and documentation systems
  • Ability to pass a federal background check, including requirements under the Crime Control Act of 1990 and the Indian Child and Family Violence Act
What sets candidates apart:
  • Prior experience working within an Indian Health Service, tribal, or other federal healthcare facility
  • Familiarity with HIPAA compliance and the handling of protected health information (PHI) in a clinical environment
  • Experience in a high-volume SPD supporting both inpatient surgical services and outpatient clinical departments
  • Cultural awareness of or experience working with American Indian and Alaska Native communities
  • Advanced sterile processing certification (e.g., CSPDT) or completion of formal SPD training programs beyond entry-level requirements
