Job Description

General Summary:

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) will serve as a scientific liaison to the medical/academic community, responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with Health Care Providers/Professionals (HCPs). The goal is to ensure the appropriate dissemination of clinical and scientific information regarding Vertex's compounds in a timely, ethical, and stakeholder-focused manner. The Sr MSL will contribute to shaping the medical plan by providing external stakeholder insights and aiding in the design and execution of the Medical Affairs strategy and plan. The MSL will engage HCPs to address scientific educational and research needs, utilizing Vertex resources, and provide the latest emerging data in response to specific inquiries.

Starting level (Senior MSL or MSL) will be based on relevant clinical and industry experience.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Develop and foster effective relationships with Thought Leaders and other appropriate HCPs, resulting in scientific engagement with CF care providers and opinion leaders. Understand inter-relationships within academic centers to enhance engagements.
  • Incorporate all aspects of the SEM (Scientific Engagement Model) into interactions to enhance quality and relationships.
  • Integrate the medical plan into interactions and territory planning, capturing feedback in the CRM system to inform internal strategies.
  • Utilize CRM/data analytics tools effectively for timely capture of interaction details and to improve future engagements.
  • Discuss scientific information effectively and compliantly, demonstrating advanced communication skills for both disease state and product information.
  • Understand the utility and functionality of payers in the region and their impact on patient care.
  • Support clinical development by understanding IB content, presenting at SIV meetings, and providing nominations for trial sites.
  • Represent Vertex at medical congresses, providing scientific session/abstract coverage, booth staffing, and logistical guidance as the “MSL congress lead”.
  • Mentor or train colleagues, including onboarding new MSLs.
  • Perform all activities in compliance with company policies, completing administrative tasks promptly.
Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to meet goals within timeframes and produce high-quality results.
  • Effective project planning in a dynamic field-based environment.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to appraise and understand medical and scientific literature.
  • Effective presentation skills for clinical/scientific information.
  • Good knowledge of the geographic territory.
  • Understanding of healthcare regulatory environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and working in a matrix environment.
  • Knowledge of relevant diseases, healthcare environment, and competitors.
  • Understanding of compliance and regulatory frameworks.
  • Knowledge of payers and medical information needs.
  • Knowledge of Health Economics and Outcomes Research.
  • Fluency in English and the local language.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to travel up to 70%, including occasional weekends.
Education and Experience:
  • Advanced biomedical or life sciences degree (e.g., Masters, NP, PA).
  • Terminal degree preferred (DO, MD, PharmD, PhD).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as an MSL or in medical affairs roles in pharma/biotech.
  • Experience or training in cystic fibrosis is desirable.
Pay Range:

$171,300 - $257,000

Disclosure Statement:

The provided range is an estimate for the base salary at posting. The role is eligible for bonuses and equity awards. Actual salary depends on skills, experience, and other factors.
