The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based healthcare professional with clinical, scientific, and therapeutic area expertise who is responsible for supporting, on a non-promotional basis, medical and scientific initiatives for marketed products. The MSL works in coordination with the rest of the medical unit to meet medical department objectives. As part of the bioMerieux team, the MSL works to ensure proper understanding and utilization of bioMérieux’s in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products through fair and balanced scientific exchange, articulating the medical value for improved clinical decision-making and patient care. He/she participates in the identification of local opportunities, leveraging a network of contacts, knowledge of healthcare systems, and characteristics of populations in the region they serve. The MSL serves as an educator for peers, responsible for providing medical and scientific education and expertise related to bioMérieux Immunoassay, Microbiology, and Molecular products, and the clinical application, utility, and medical impact of these solutions.
Responsibilities also include development and implementation of medical engagement strategic plans linked to the overall medical plan specific to their region of focus, which involves careful consideration of scientific engagement, insight gathering, KOL development, response to requests for medical information, and additional opportunities for customer engagement.
Primary Duties
Scientific Engagement - Keep up-to-date with scientific and medical knowledge in the areas of interest for the company (mainly Infectious Diseases/Microbiology and Acute care) in order to provide relevant advice to appropriate individuals; attend pertinent sessions of healthcare-associated meetings (government, NGO, medical, patient, etc.); meet with KOLs/experts and healthcare providers and be knowledgeable in the relevant medical literature, developments, and guidelines for the assigned product areas. Disseminate this knowledge as appropriate to healthcare professionals in response to requests, in accordance with applicable laws.
Insight Gathering - Collect and submit relevant feedback, determined through strategic discussions and medical planning, from both internal and external sources, for prioritized bioMérieux products.
KOL Development - Identify, engage, and develop long-term relationships with current and rising thought leaders (KOLs, experts, others) in pertinent therapeutic areas (infectious disease, critical care, surgery, and other relevant specialties such as laboratory medicine, pharmacy, quality, etc.) based on medical prioritization through medical planning. Build a strong network of pertinent and relevant experts to obtain advice, expert opinion, and foster collaborations of trust.
Educate Physicians and Laboratory, in a fair and balanced manner, including reactive off-label responses, on the clinical pathways for disease and the application of bioMerieux products in the risk assessment/diagnostic process. Education may be provided through both formal and informal programs and customized to meet individual needs.
Develop and maintain a Territory Medical Engagement Strategic Plan to support bioMerieux medical product strategy and communicate market insights with US Medical Affairs leadership.
Respond to Unsolicited Requests for Medical Information including off-label scientific evidence associated with supported products and disease state areas using evidenced-based research presented in a fair and balanced manner and in accordance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and bioMerieux policies, procedures, and practices.
Engage With Customers to Support the Development of Relevant Disease State Care Pathways/Protocols to improve the design and management of implementation programs.
Experience
Bachelor’s degree required.
Advanced Health Science degree (e.g., MD, PhD, PharmD, NP, PA) with significant clinical experience in a relevant field (e.g., critical care, infectious disease) preferred.
Current licensed practitioner in state of residence preferred.
Minimum of 3 years of continuous significant clinical experience.
Excellent knowledge of hospital/clinical/medical issues and clinical practices related to patient care. Specific regional healthcare system knowledge and relationships preferred.
Demonstrated experience in translating the value of laboratory innovation into clinical application. Experience with Pharma/IVD industry preferred.
Experience with IVD products and/or clinical lab environment is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Demonstrated scientific acumen and sound medical judgment to establish sustainable relationships with healthcare providers.
Strong communication, presentation, and relationship development skills for internal and external stakeholders.
Proficient with Microsoft Office; familiarity with data interpretation, critical appraisal, clinical trials, and GCP.
Travel required 60-70% within the Pacific Northwest region.
