Job description

Brief Description:

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a member of a field-based team of scientists who function as an extension of the US Medical Affairs organization. MSLs are responsible for developing and enhancing professional relationships with medical thought leaders involved in various phases of product development. MSLs provide medical information through scientific exchange and clinical/scientific support for Jazz Pharmaceuticals and the Medical Affairs department.

This is a field-based position covering Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Utah, and requires professionals with established personal and scientific credibility to interact with thought leaders and academic centers of excellence.

Essential Functions

  1. KOL Development and Field Engagement:
  2. Identify and develop peer-to-peer relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and healthcare providers within the Oncology therapeutic area.
  3. Develop and execute territory plans in alignment with US Medical Affairs plans.
  4. Identify and communicate key clinical and research issues and insights from KOLs to appropriate departments.
  5. Participate in medical education for healthcare professionals (HCPs) through on-site presentations at healthcare institutions, investigator meetings, national conferences, advisory boards, or regional meetings.
  6. Provide scientific support for additional activities such as medical congress staffing, advisory boards, and sales training initiatives.

Positions as Scientific Expert

  1. Maintain an up-to-date and high-level knowledge of the therapy area, Jazz products, new and emerging areas of research, therapeutic issues, trends, and the competitive landscape.
  2. Establish a reputation as a trustworthy and knowledgeable source of scientific and medical information for the healthcare community.
  3. Support the development of Jazz Pharmaceuticals' positioning as the scientific authority in the therapeutic area. Attend appropriate scientific congresses to stay abreast of developments and support regional, national, and local KOL activities and Jazz interests.
  4. Acquire a broad understanding of local and national protocols, standards of clinical practice, and trends in disease management in the US.
  5. Provide clinical presentations and information in response to unsolicited questions in academic, community, and healthcare provider settings, both in groups and one-on-one.
  6. Communicate emerging data and clinical experiences with our products through scientific exchange and peer-to-peer interactions, discussing benefits and risks objectively.
  7. Support data generation activities (company-sponsored studies, collaboration studies, ISTs).
  8. Provide scientific support for activities such as medical congress staffing, advisory boards, and sales training initiatives.

Medical Affairs Planning and Plan Execution

  1. Contribute to the development of the US Medical Plan and provide input into local strategies and tactics.
  2. Manage relevant budgets to enable execution of Medical Plan tactics as part of the wider Medical Affairs team.
  3. Collaborate with cross-functional colleagues to ensure a Key Account Management approach.
  4. Interact with HCPs as a scientific resource to support activities aligned with the Medical Plan, including advisory boards, speaker development, and clinical trials.

Responsible for maintaining Company standards and Jazz Values

  1. Act to enhance Jazz Pharmaceuticals’ image as an advocate of medical advancement by engaging healthcare providers in meaningful scientific exchange using knowledge of products, disease states, and pipeline products.
  2. Document and report adverse events and product complaints according to Jazz policies to ensure safe and effective use of products.
  3. Adhere to relevant national and local Codes of Practice.
  4. Behave ethically and with integrity at all times.
  5. Act as an ambassador for Jazz Pharmaceuticals, following company mission and values.
  6. Maintain and implement a written development plan.
  7. Prepare timely reports according to company needs.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • Ability to research, critically analyze, and communicate complex scientific and medical data.

Preferred

  • Knowledge of geography, healthcare environment, and external experts in academia and the medical community.
  • Ability to develop trust and relationships with opinion leaders in relevant disease states.
  • Understanding of regulatory requirements for field-based personnel.

Required/Preferred Education and Licenses

  • Advanced degree (PharmD, MD, PhD, or equivalent) with 3-5 years of experience in hematology/oncology.
  • License (RN, NP, CNP, PA, or equivalent) with a Master’s Degree (or equivalent) and 5+ years’ experience in hematology/oncology clinical practice.
  • At least 2 years’ experience as an MSL or similar industry or clinical role.
  • Experience as a Medical Science Liaison in solid tumors and/or molecular diagnostics with a successful track record is preferred.
  • This is a field position; willingness to travel 60-70% required.
  • Valid driver’s license and residence within 60 miles of a major airport.

  • Frequent interactions with external contacts in an office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.
  • Frequent use of computers, laptops, or tablets, often outside a fixed workstation.
  • Work schedule may include outside normal hours to meet business demands.
  • Public contact requiring appropriate business attire.
