The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) is a field-based scientist who acts as an extension of the Medical Affairs team, responsible for building relationships with thought leaders in oncology across Central California, Nevada, Utah, and Hawaii. The role involves scientific exchange, providing medical information, and supporting research activities.
Essential Functions
- KOL Development and Field Engagement:
- Identify and develop relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs) and healthcare providers in Oncology.
- Develop and execute territory plans aligned with Medical Affairs strategies.
- Communicate insights from KOLs to relevant departments.
- Participate in medical education through presentations, conferences, advisory boards, and meetings.
- Support congress staffing, advisory boards, and sales training.
- Position as Scientific Expert:
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the therapy area, products, research, and trends.
- Establish reputation as a trusted scientific source.
- Support Jazz's positioning as a scientific authority in Oncology.
- Attend scientific congresses and stay informed on developments.
- Provide clinical presentations and respond to scientific questions.
- Share emerging data and clinical experiences objectively.
- Medical Affairs Planning and Execution:
- Contribute to US Medical Plan development and local strategies.
- Manage relevant budgets for plan execution.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams for key account management.
- Support activities like advisory boards, speaker development, and clinical trials.
- Maintain Standards and Values:
- Enhance Jazz's image through scientific engagement.
- Report adverse events and product complaints per policy.
- Adhere to ethical standards and codes of practice.
- Act as an ambassador for Jazz Pharmaceuticals.
- Maintain and implement personal development plans.
- Ensure timely reporting.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Research, analyze, and communicate complex scientific data.
- Strong presentation and communication skills.
- Excellent planning, organization, and attention to detail.
- Strategic thinking and self-motivation.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt.
- Negotiation and interpersonal skills.
- Proficiency with digital tools.
- Fluent spoken English.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of geography and healthcare environment.
- Experience developing relationships with opinion leaders.
- Understanding of regulatory requirements.
Education and Licenses
- Advanced degree (PharmD, MD, PhD) with at least 3 years in oncology.
- License (RN, NP, CNP, PA) with at least 5 years in oncology.
- At least 2 years as an MSL or similar role.
- Experience in solid tumors and targeted therapies preferred.
- Willingness to travel (~60%).
- Valid driver’s license and residence near a major airport.
Physical Demands
- Frequent travel and operating office machinery.
Work Environment
- Interactions with external contacts, minimal exposure to hazards.
- Work may include outside normal hours and require professional attire.
