Job Description Summary

The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) role is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific position. The MSL's key objective is to create impact by advancing clinical practice within the assigned territory, leading to improved patient outcomes. The MSL must demonstrate deep therapeutic expertise, understand territory and market influences, engage scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manage and develop their territory, and execute all relevant activities in alignment with the medical strategic and tactical plan—while functioning within the Novartis Code of Conduct, Ethics/Compliance policies, and Working Practice documents. The MSL will inform and shape medical strategy through application of a curious mindset to collect impactful and actionable insights, understanding the potential strategic impact of critical insights.

This territory will cover Central/South Arizona, NM, and the city of El Paso, TX. The preferred location for the successful candidate would be to reside in Phoenix or near a major airport. Candidates must live within 50 miles of the territory border; relocation is not available.

Role Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. The MSL will leverage scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish and build professional relationships and engage with HCPs (including community physicians, pharmacists, medical experts, nurses, and other healthcare professionals) and other thought leaders in the geographical area, aligned with medical strategy.
  2. The primary responsibility of the MSL is to engage with customers, including but not limited to: emerging data discussions, clinical trial activities, uncovering barriers in patient journeys, understanding market dynamics within their territory, exploring unmet medical needs, pipeline discussions, educating on disease states and products, capturing adverse events, and gathering medical insights throughout the product lifecycle.
  3. Must demonstrate strategic territory vision and ensure appropriate territory identification, mapping, and planning of Medical Engagements (MEs) and Key Accounts, in collaboration with internal colleagues. This includes:
    1. Identifying key stakeholders influencing the patient journey and disease space throughout the product development lifecycle to establish strategies for education, engagement, and partnership.
    2. Identifying opportunities for partnerships with academic centers, centers of excellence, and systems of care to drive impact.
    3. Identifying opportunities to involve HCPs or MEs when specific medical needs are identified (e.g., publications, clinical trial participation).
    4. Identifying opportunities for internal collaboration to advance therapeutic area, clinical, or product goals.
  4. Providing clinical trial support for company-sponsored trials, facilitating relevant medical activities, and working cross-functionally with Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations colleagues.
  5. Collaborating regularly and effectively with internal teams (e.g., HEOR, access, marketing, commercial, sales) to advance clinical practice while maintaining customer centricity and a One Novartis approach, in accordance with compliance standards.
  6. Maintaining in-depth knowledge of the assigned therapeutic area and Novartis compounds to serve as a medical resource to customers and internal colleagues.
  7. Staying informed of internal policies and external regulations affecting day-to-day responsibilities.
  8. Executing administrative responsibilities and training (e.g., Veeva CRM, voicemail, email, expense reports, compliance modules) timely, including profiling customers and maintaining up-to-date CRM data.
  9. Championing emerging responsibilities as strategic priorities and evolving territory needs.
  10. Proactively pursuing personal and professional development.

The pay range at the start of employment is expected to be between $166,400 - $249,600 for Manager and $183,200 - $274,800 for AD. Salary ranges are effective from 1/1/25 through 12/31/25, but market fluctuations may necessitate adjustments. Final pay will depend on various factors, including location, experience, skills, and abilities. The total compensation may include a sign-on bonus, stock units, discretionary awards, and benefits such as medical, financial, and paid time off. Details will be provided upon employment offer.
