Job summary

Mountain Valley Hospice is seeking a Medical Records Specialist to join the Galax Office. This full-time role in Hillsville/Galax, VA requires maintaining accurate patient records, coordinating with clinical staff, and ensuring EMR documentation is complete.

Schedule: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM. Prior hospice or long-term care EMR experience and strong organizational and communication skills are preferred. Salary range is $16–$20 per hour.

Qualifications

• 1 year of experience in medical records (hospice or long-term care preferred).
• Knowledge of medical terminology and experience with electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
• Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform office tasks such as answering phones, scheduling visits, distributing mail, and ordering office supplies.
• Prepare, update, and maintain accurate medical records for each patient.
• Review documentation for completeness and communicate with clinical staff about any errors or missing information before filing.
• Organize and prepare documents for interdisciplinary team meetings.
• Assist with coordinating durable medical equipment (DME) for patients as needed.

In this role, you'll be responsible for ensuring our patients’ medical records are complete and up to date, providing essential support to both our clinical team and the families we serve.
