Medical Physicist Assistant – Information Technology (Scope of Position)

Department: Medicine | Radiation Oncology

Scope of Position

The Medical Physicist Assistant in Radiation Oncology works under the supervision of the Chief Physicist or designee. Responsibilities include specification, acquisition, and commissioning of all radiation generating equipment, calibration and QA of treatment machines using departmental protocols, and acquisition and maintenance of all dosimetry and health‑physics equipment. The role also reviews radiation treatment charts, performs treatment plan second checks, brachytherapy planning, and radiosurgery clinical coverage.

Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Chief Medical Physicist or designee, the assistant provides entry‑level professional medical physics services at the Department of Radiation Oncology (or its outreach/affiliates) of the OSU Wexner Medical Center. The position evaluates and interprets medical radiation treatment prescriptions, collaborates with medical providers in designing and modifying effective radiation treatments, oversees and monitors treatment plans developed by dosimetrists, and participates in the development and execution of equipment monitoring, quality assurance, calibration, and safety surveys. The assistant provides technical assistance in developing treatment plans for patients undergoing radiation therapy, monitors patients, maintains established policies, procedures, objectives, quality measurement, and safety, and performs clinical research as required. The role follows established processes and treatment and QA standards and develops procedures for the department.

Minimum Qualifications

• MS degree in medical physics or a similar field from a CAMPEP accredited program.
• Strong foundation in basic physics as demonstrated by a master’s level education in medical physics or a comparable discipline.
