Description

Children’s Hospital of Michigan is an international leader in pediatric and adolescent medicine. Surgical services include general, thoracic, reconstructive, and cardiovascular. Imaging technology designed specifically for children provides advanced diagnostic services including Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and MRI. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Emergency Department is a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and dedicated pediatric burn center. Experts in pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, and neonatal and perinatal medicine provide care for thousands of children annually at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Children’s Hospital of Michigan - Troy, and six ambulatory sites.

Summary / Description

Note: Refer to Medical Office Assistant Scope of Practice addendum, attached.

Under general supervision, and according to established policies and procedures, performs duties of a Medical Assistant and Patient Services Assistant for the assigned area. Greets visitors, registers patients, contacts insurance providers, and schedules patients. Assists physicians or physician extenders with patient examinations by preparing exam rooms, taking vital signs, and assisting during exams.

  1. Greets visitors, answers phones, and directs calls and visitors appropriately.
  2. Registers patients for outpatient services, obtaining demographic, insurance, and related data according to policies.
  3. Contacts insurance providers to determine benefit levels and patient co-pays, collects and posts payments, and prepares daily deposit summaries.
  4. Prepares patient charts prior to appointments, files notes, prescriptions, face sheets, and releases medical records as needed.
  5. Assists physicians with patient exams, prepares exam rooms, and handles instruments.
  6. Takes vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, and weight; documents reasons for visit and vital signs.
  7. Performs medical procedures such as giving non-intravenous injections, venipuncture, EKGs, stress tests, routine X-rays, and PFTs.
  8. Obtains referrals and schedules appointments or procedures.
  9. Enters, reviews, researches, and corrects patient billing information in computerized records and communicates with billing companies.
  10. Performs support duties like preparing laboratory slips, typing correspondence, and training new personnel.
  11. Follows safety policies and participates in safety training including CPR and annual safety courses.
Skills Required
  • Analytical skills for handling patient issues, verifying insurance, and researching billing problems.
  • Ability to support and travel between clinics.
  • Effective interpersonal communication with patients, physicians, and staff.
  • Some mental/visual stamina for reviewing insurance and posting payments.
  • Knowledge of blood pressure measurement techniques.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduation from a practical nursing school or completion of a PCA/PCT, Nurse Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, or Phlebotomy training program, or six months of related patient care experience.
  • One year of experience performing Medical Assistant or Patient Care Associate duties.
  • One year of experience in medical office clerical duties such as insurance verification, authorizations, billing, and EMR.
  • Medical Assistant certification preferred.
