Job description

The Children’s Hospital of Michigan Emergency Department is a verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and dedicated pediatric burn center. Experts in pediatric critical care, rehabilitation, neonatal, and perinatal medicine provide care for thousands of children every year at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Children’s Hospital of Michigan - Troy, and six ambulatory sites.

Summary / Description

NOTE: Refer to Medical Office Assistant Scope of Practice addendum, attached.

Under general supervision, and according to established policies and procedures, performs duties of a Medical Assistant and Patient Services Assistant for the assigned area. Greets visitors, registers patients, contacts insurance providers, and schedules patients according to established guidelines. Assists physicians or physician extenders with patient examinations by preparing exam rooms, taking vital signs, assisting during exams, etc.

  • Greets visitors, answers telephones, and directs calls and visitors to appropriate persons.
  • Registers patients for outpatient services, obtaining necessary demographic, insurance, and related data.
  • Contacts insurance providers to determine benefit levels and patient co-pays, as needed. Collects and posts payments and prepares daily deposits.
  • Prepares patient charts prior to appointments. Files notes, prescriptions, face sheets, and other documentation. Copies and releases medical record information as needed.
  • Assists physicians with patient examinations by preparing exam rooms, helping to move or position patients, handling instruments, etc.
  • Takes vital signs such as temperature, blood pressure, and weight. Documents reasons for visits and vital signs in patient charts.
  • May perform procedures like giving non-intravenous injections, venipuncture, EKGs, stress tests, routine x-rays, PFTs, and related activities.
  • Obtains referrals and schedules patient appointments or procedures following guidelines.
  • Enters, reviews, researches, and corrects computerized patient billing records. Provides billing information to the billing company.
  • Performs support duties like preparing lab slips, statistical data, typing correspondence, training new personnel, etc.
  • Follows safety policies and participates in safety training, including CPR and annual safety refreshers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Graduation from a practical nursing school ...OR completion of one of the following:
  • PCA/PCT Program
  • Nurse Assistant Program or equivalent training
  • Medical Assistant Program or six months of experience in a doctor’s office performing Medical Assistant duties
  • EMT
  • Phlebotomy training with six months of direct patient care experience preferred

One year of previous experience performing Medical Assistant or Patient Care Associate duties. One year of medical office clerical experience (insurance verification, authorizations, billing, EMR) in a related setting. Medical Assistant certification is preferred.
