IDEXX in North Grafton, MA is seeking a Microbiology Medical Laboratory Technologist (Part Time) to perform diagnostic tests that support veterinarians in treating pets. You will work on site with automated analyzers, microscopes, and culture reading to deliver accurate results in a fast-paced team environment.

Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Veterinary Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or related field.
  • Extensive microbiology knowledge including culture reading, media, techniques and organism identification.
  • Culture reading experience in a high-volume, fast-paced lab.
  • Experience setting up, running, reading lab tests and operating lab equipment (microscopes, pipetting, analyzers).
  • Positive attitude, teamwork, attention to detail and reliability.
  • Able to stand/sit for long periods, lift up to 50 lb, and meet lab safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analyses and tests to diagnose animal illnesses using automated analyzers, microscopes and other tools.
  • Examine, interpret and document microbiological cultures from animal specimens.
  • Specialize in reading culture plates, organism identification, QA and safety practices.
  • Read and document bacterial, fungal, and yeast cultures; evaluate colony morphology and hemolysis.
  • Perform gram stains, staining procedures, biochemical testing and MALDI-TOF as needed.
  • Set up and run lab tests; read and release results per SOPs.
  • Work in an assigned department and explore related reference laboratories opportunities.

As a Microbiology Medical Laboratory Technologist (Part Time) at IDEXX, you perform laboratory testing that helps veterinarians diagnose and treat pets. In This Role
  • You will use automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.
  • You will be responsible for examining, interpreting and documenting microbiological cultures from animal specimens to support the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases.
  • This role requires expertise in culture plate evaluation, organism identification, quality assurance practices and laboratory safety procedures.
  • You can expect to specialize in reading, interpreting and documenting bacterial, fungal, and yeast cultures from a variety of animal specimens
  • You will be evaluating colony morphology, growth characteristics, hemolysis patterns and organism abundance
  • You should be able to perform and interpret gram stains and other microbiological staining procedures, utilize identification methods including biochemical testing, automated systems for testing and MALDI-TOF technology
  • You will set up and run lab tests, then read and release results according to SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures).

What You Need To Succeed
  • You possess an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Microbiology, Biology, Veterinary Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field.
  • You have an extensive skillset in microbiology, culture reading, knowledge of microbiological media, culture techniques and organism identification.
  • Candidates must have culture reading experience in a high volume, fast paced laboratory
  • Ideally, you will have experience setting up, running, and reading lab tests, and operating laboratory equipment (microscopes, pipetting and / or clinical diagnostic analyzers).
  • You have a positive attitude and love to bring that energy into the lab every day to support your colleagues
  • You are looking forward to working in a team
  • You concentrate on the details and can work reliably and precisely
  • You have a great sense of team spirit and responsibility
  • Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab – standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability – close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.

  • The schedule for this position is: Monday - Friday
  • The hours for this position are flexible! Start time is between 5am-9am
  • This is a part time position
  • You must be able to work one rotating weekend day
  • The shifts and hours may vary slightly depending on business needs.
  • Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position.
