Job summary

IDEXX Laboratories, Inc is seeking an experienced Medical Laboratory Technologist for our PORTLAND, OR reference laboratory. This full-time role supports veterinary diagnostics with automated analyzers, microscopy, and a broad suite of tests across multiple departments.

Qualifications

  • MLS/CLS/MT/MLT degree required in medical lab science or related field.
  • ASCP/ASCP-BOC/AMT/AAB certification preferred; experience in reference or veterinary labs required.
  • Experience in hematology, chemistry, microbiology, immunology/serology, urinalysis or cytology; cross-trained in two+ areas preferred.
  • Experience with Sysmex XN Series, Beckman Coulter, CellaVision, Coag Analyzers, Clinitek Advantus/Novus, and Hamilton automation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform analyses and tests on blood, urine, fecal or biopsy samples using automated analyzers, microscopes and other diagnostic tools.
  • Set up, run, and release lab results according to SOPs.
  • Specialize in an assigned department and collaborate with teams to ensure quality diagnostics.

As an experienced Medical Laboratory Technologist at IDEXX, you perform laboratory testing that helps veterinarians diagnose and treat pets. In this role:
  • You will use automated analyzers, microscopes and other laboratory diagnostic tools to perform analyses and tests that diagnose animal illnesses, injuries and diseases in support of veterinarian animal treatment.
  • You will perform diagnostic tests on blood, urine, fecal or pet biopsy samples that we receive in our lab by the thousands, every day.

What you need to succeed:
  • As a Medical Laboratory Technologist, you will have an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science (MLS), Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS), Medical Technology (MT), Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT), or a related biological, biomedical, or chemical science field.
  • Candidates who have an ASCP, ASCP-BOC, AMT, AAB, or equivalent professional certification are highly preferred. Prior experience in a reference laboratory, hospital laboratory, veterinary diagnostic laboratory, research laboratory, or high-volume clinical testing environment is also required.
  • Qualified applicants who will be considered for this position must have comprehensive academic training and hands-on clinical experience in: Hematology, Chemistry, Microbiology, Immunology/Serology, Urinalysis and Cytology. Ideally, you will have a strong skillset in two or more of these departments (Cross-Trained Technologist).
  • Extensive skillset utilizing the Sysmex XN Series, Beckman Coulter, CellaVision, Coag Analyzers, Clinitek Advantus/Novus, automated liquid handling experience (Hamilton).
  • Instrument maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting independently is also a plus.
  • Knowledge and compliance of CLIA, CAP and/or Joint Commission standards knowledge, OSHA/biohazards safety protocols, documentation and chain-of-custody procedures and LIS proficiency.
  • Independent result interpretation utilizing critical thinking skills, delta checks and recognition of discrepancies between clinical presentation and lab results.

  • You concentrate on details and can work reliably, precisely and take pride in your attention to detail. You are aware that each specimen in our labs is an opportunity to make a meaningful impact by contributing accurate diagnostics that support patient and animal health outcomes.
  • Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting up to 50lb, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • This is a laboratory, so there is potential exposure to biohazards, agents known to cause zoonotic diseases, and hazardous chemicals.

  • Hourly rates targeting: $30 / hr (but will be based on skillset)
  • Employees who work during 3rd shift hours are eligible for shift differential at the rate of an additional $3 / hr

Schedule:
  • This position is a 3rd Shift position
  • The schedule will be: Tuesday - Saturday with Rotating Sundays
  • The hours will be: Midnight - 8:30am
  • If you are working a rotation shift, you are off a day through the week
  • The shifts and hours may vary slightly depending on business needs.
  • Reliable and dependable attendance is an essential function of the position.
