Responsibilities

Job Summary

Perform complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues, including identifying microorganisms, analyzing chemical content, and cross-matching blood for transfusions. The results aid in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases.

1. Prepare and perform laboratory tests accurately within turnaround time, document results, and follow up on critical findings.
2. Handle specimens properly, understanding factors affecting test accuracy, and ensure specimen integrity.
3. Operate laboratory instrumentation, perform maintenance, calibrations, quality control, troubleshoot issues, and escalate unusual cases.
4. Maintain continuing education and meet competency requirements per policies and certifications.
5. Ensure compliance with hospital, safety, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
6. Utilize hospital, laboratory, and office computer systems proficiently.
7. Assist, train, and orient new staff and students as needed, support regulatory prep, manage supplies, and practice cost containment.
8. Review policies, procedures, and communications regularly. Perform other duties including phlebotomy as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Associate's Degree in chemical, physical, or biological sciences, or medical laboratory training, or equivalent education and training. Individuals performing high complexity testing with a high school diploma and documented training may continue to do so under specific conditions outlined by CLIA regulations.
