Job description

Medical Laboratory Technician, PRN (Healthcare)

Position Overview: The Medical Laboratory Technician performs medical laboratory tests, procedures, experiments, and analyses to provide data for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease across all age groups. Compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as PMHC policies, is mandatory.

Essential Functions:
  1. Verify and validate patient results independently.
  2. Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids such as blood, urine, and spinal fluid under supervision.
  3. Study blood cells, including their numbers and morphology.
  4. Perform blood typing and compatibility tests for transfusions.
  5. Analyze test results and document findings in computer systems.
  6. Assess patient data considering age and condition, providing appropriate information to patients and families.
  7. Perform quality control to ensure data accuracy and assist in quality assurance activities.
  8. Perform routine maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.
  9. Collect blood samples using aseptic techniques.
  10. Prepare specimens for transfer to referral facilities.
  11. Verify instrument calibration and document maintenance activities.
  12. Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  13. Participate in departmental call rotations.
  14. Provide excellent customer service to clients.
  15. Train and supervise students as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

Reports directly to the Director of Laboratory.

Physical Demands:

Requires frequent use of hands, talking, hearing, standing, walking, sitting, reaching, and occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Vision requirements include close, color, and depth perception.

Work Environment:

Work involves exposure to moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, and chemicals. Moderate noise levels are typical. Risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens is classified as Category I.

Education and Certifications:

Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a accredited college or university. Certifications such as M.T. (A.S.C.P.) or M.T. (H.E.W.) are preferred.
