Job summary

Mercyhealth is seeking a laboratory specialist to collect patient samples and perform tests in hematology, chemistry and microbiology. You will use the lab information system, perform quality checks, and report critical results with accuracy.

The role includes maintaining equipment, troubleshooting issues, and training new partners and students while meeting turnaround times and safety standards.

Qualifications

• Associate degree in medical laboratory science or military equivalent.
• Qualified to perform high complexity testing per CLIA 493.1489.
• Must obtain MLT certification within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

Job description

OVERVIEWThe job involves collecting patient samples and performing laboratory tests in areas such as blood, urine, chemistry, microbiology, and blood banking. The employee must make sure test results are accurate, complete quality checks, maintain lab equipment, and report critical results on time. The role also includes using lab computer systems, troubleshooting problems, and helping train new staff and students.SCHEDULE: 7 nights on, 7 nights off rotationSHIFT: NightsESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESUtilize the Information System to receive patients, order and collect samples, result tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians, document quality control activities and produce reports required to perform job tasks.Perform lab tests in the lab specialties of hematology, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank or microbiology by automated and manual methods according to defined policies and procedures.Analyze test results prior to release of information to chart for validity and accuracy.Assure that designated turnaround times for results are met and that critical results are appropriately reported and documented.Perform quality control and proficiency testing procedures as defined by policyInterpret and troubleshoot quality control results to ensure accurate and precise test results.Perform preventative maintenance, minor troubleshooting and calibration of laboratory instrumentation.Participates in method and instrument evaluation and implementation.Participates in teaching and training of new partners and students.Maintain competency in current procedures and gain competency for new methods implemented.Collect patient specimens.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEAssociate degree in medical laboratory science or military equivalent or must be qualified to perform high complexity testing according to CLIA 493.1489 Standard: Testing personnel qualifications.CERTIFICATION AND LICENSUREMLT certification within one year of hire or meets CLIA 493.1489 Standard: Testing personnel qualifications on or before April 24, 1995SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe Special Physical Demands are considered Essential Job Functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
