Description:

A Medical Laboratory Tech (MLT), under the supervision of the Medical Technologist, is responsible for performing and reporting laboratory tests ordered by physicians. These tests include chemistry, bacteriology, serology, hematology, and blood bank, aiming to provide reliable and accurate information for the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions within professional standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support and promote an environment aligned with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.
  • Ensure proper specimen collection, identification, and integrity throughout testing through education, training, and protocols.
  • Perform tests using microscopes, chemicals, computers, and precision instruments according to established protocols.
  • Utilize appropriate interventions for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Report accurate results promptly and initiate re-testing if critical values are obtained.
  • Prepare reagents, solutions, and stains following established formulas.
  • Conduct evaluations and calibrations of procedures as required.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment.
  • Perform electrocardiograms, Holter, and event monitors when necessary.
  • Assist with daily paperwork, result distribution, and specimen pickups from nursing homes and doctor offices.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient, hospital, and physician information.
  • Keep the work area orderly and adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, which may change without prior notice.

  • Complete daily duties and accept reassignments as needed.
  • Follow work practices, work safely, and report unsafe conditions.

  • Assist with duties outside specific responsibilities as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of working with diverse patient populations across all age groups.
  • Provide leadership to Laboratory Assistants to meet workload demands.
  • Work effectively with a diverse team and under pressure.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating good mental health and emotional maturity.
  • Maintain personal grooming and hygiene standards.
  • Understand the use and limitations of laboratory equipment and stay current with methods and techniques.
  • Respect patients' emotional, social, and cultural needs, preserving their dignity.
  • Participate in cleaning and maintaining supplies and equipment, practicing Universal Precautions.
  • Show genuine concern for the patient population served.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to pass specific competencies for the position.
  • Proficient in oral and written communication.
  • One year of hospital experience is helpful.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • MLT Registry certification.
  • CPR certification—new staff must obtain within six months if not currently certified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Prolonged standing, walking, climbing, balancing, stooping, and kneeling.
  • Repetitive use of arms, hands, fingers; feeling.
  • Lift up to 25 pounds frequently, up to 50 pounds occasionally, with assistance for heavier loads.
  • Specific vision requirements include close, distance, and focus adjustment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Well-lit, climate-controlled setting.
  • Potential exposure to communicable diseases, chemicals, physical hazards, needles, odors, and materials.
  • Noise level is quiet to moderate.

CORPORATE COMPLIANCE

Participate in training and meetings to adhere to Hillsboro Health’s compliance policies. Understand responsibilities related to compliance and contact the Compliance Officer with concerns about fraud or abuse.
