About The Outer Banks Hospital

The Outer Banks Hospital is a full-service critical access hospital offering a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services. The 21-bed facility is designed to meet the needs of the coastal community, whose year-round population of approximately 35,000 swells to about 350,000 in the summer season. Its campus includes four ORs, a medical/surgical unit, a labor & delivery suite with a dedicated caesarian section OR, a full rehabilitation therapy center, cancer treatment and radiation therapy center, and a 24-hour emergency department.

Position Summary

The Medical Laboratory Technician performs clinical laboratory tests according to standard operating policies and procedures. This includes understanding method principles, performing quality control & calibrations, preventive maintenance, and analyzing results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare patient specimens for laboratory testing and perform department-specific tests.
  • Monitor test results to ensure quality and validity.
  • Communicate test results promptly.
  • Enter and retrieve data from laboratory computer systems.
  • Assist in training or orientation of new or less experienced staff or students.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and environment.
  • Demonstrate respectful and caring behavior towards patients, families, visitors, and staff.
  • Work alternate shifts as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, including phlebotomy.
Minimum Requirements
  • Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or currently enrolled in an accredited Clinical Laboratory Science Program with completed rotations in Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology, and Transfusion Services. Equivalent military laboratory training/experience (2 years) also acceptable.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by ASCP or other recognized agency.
Additional Information
  • 36 hours/week, 3 shifts of 12 hours (7 am - 7 pm).
  • Rotational schedule: Week 1 - Sun, Mon, Fri; Week 2 - Mon, Fri, Sat; Week 3 - Sun, Thu, Sat.
