Description
Summary:
Performs clinical testing in assigned sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology, ensuring accurate and timely results, including quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and equipment maintenance. Recognizes abnormal critical values and follows guidelines for notifying medical staff. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations. Provides and dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.
Responsibilities:

- Ensures that the company's philosophy and core values are reflected in the service delivered to customers.
- Specimen Collection/Handling/Processing: obtains blood specimens via venipuncture and/or fingerstick, correctly identifies and labels them, handles pneumatic tube system, processes and tests specimens following procedures, and operates various laboratory equipment.
- Result Reporting: recognizes errors or improbable results, reports critical values as per policy, performs tests within established timeframes, and operates laboratory analyzers.
- Performs, analyzes, and records QC according to policies, following CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO guidelines; conducts Performance Improvement activities.
- Performs daily and periodic preventative maintenance, troubleshoots minor issues, orders supplies, and reviews policies and reagent expiration dates.
- Seeks professional growth and continuing education.
- Assists in training new staff and students.
- Follows CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, and OSHA standards.
- Adheres to safety, infection control, security, and hazardous materials protocols.
- Uses LIS and HIS systems appropriately for testing, charging, and reporting results.
- Completes annual competency assessments on schedule.
Job Requirements:
Education/Skills
- Associates Degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent training and experience per CLIA regulation 42CFR493.1489.
- OR completion of a U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks, with current military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist.
- OR 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including specific coursework in medical laboratory technology or sciences, plus laboratory training approved by HHS organizations or documented experience in high complexity testing in each specialty.
Experience
- No experience required if graduate of an approved clinical laboratory training program.
- OR six months of approved clinical laboratory experience, including rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids, within the last 5 years.
Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
- Louisiana State Licensure required.
- New graduates must be Board Certified or eligible, with certification completed within one year of hire (excluding Louisiana residents).
