Job summary

WVU Medicine through GRMC Garrett Regional Medical Center is seeking a qualified laboratory professional to perform and analyze clinical tests across disciplines, adhering to licensure and SOPs. You will set up instruments, run quality control, perform phlebotomy as needed, and report results to nurses and physicians with accuracy and professionalism.

Required: AAS in Medical Laboratory Technology or related science and current state licensure; ASCP/AMT certification preferred; strong teamwork

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or higher in Medical Laboratory Technology or a related science field.
  • Valid licensure as required by the state where services are provided (WV: HCTP or Trainee License, etc.).
  • ASCP or AMT certification is preferred for this role.

Responsibilities

  • Process and analyze clinical specimens across disciplines.
  • Set up, operate, maintain and calibrate laboratory instruments.
  • Perform quality control and infection control procedures.
  • Perform phlebotomy on patients as needed.
  • Document and report results to nurses/physicians accurately.

Job description

Perform and analyze clinical laboratory tests within scope of licensure in all laboratory disciplines by standard operating policies and procedures. Understand method principles, perform quality control, perform preventative maintenance, review, and analyze results as to accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate of Science (AAS) degree in Medical (Clinical) Laboratory Technology or Science OR Associate’s degree is a chemical or biological science.
  • Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided: PA: No state license issued WV: High Complexity Testing Personnel (HCTP) License OR Trainee License issued by the WV Department of Health MD: No state license issued OH: No state license issued
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT).
  • Experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Process and analyze samples, in a timely and orderly fashion, and meet usual and customary levels of productivity, while following procedures for accurate identification.
  2. Set up, run, maintain, and adjust laboratory instruments accordingly to policies and procedures.
  3. Take appropriate action for quality control in all technical areas and follow infection control procedures for all job‑related functions.
  4. Perform phlebotomy procedures on patients as needed.
  5. Complete forms and reports findings to nurses and/or physicians.
  6. Interact with other healthcare workers to solve problems and interpret patient lab results within the framework of medical technology.
  7. Perform routine and basic laboratory testing within a designated area in the clinical laboratory.
  8. Recognize testing inconsistency and takes appropriate corrective action.
  9. Maintain all patent and specimen records accurately, neatly, and legibly.
  10. Follow hospital, state, and federal guidelines for ensuring a safe environment for workers, patients, and public.
  11. Maintain compliance with hospital and departmental policies and procedures for safety, security, and infection control.
  12. Communicate and interact with patients, families, visitors, physicians, departmental and hospital staff, and the public in general, in a manner that demonstrates professionalism and concern for their individual needs.
Physical Requirements
  1. Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying of materials and equipment.
  2. May sit for extended period of time.
Working Environment
  1. Work around strong or unpleasant odors.
  2. May be exposed to agents which may cause serious disease.
