Job summary

Beloit Health System is hiring a Medical Laboratory Technician to join our Laboratory team in Beloit, WI. The role involves performing and evaluating a range of complex tests to aid in diagnosis and treatment by physicians.

The incumbent will analyze body fluids, report results, troubleshoot equipment, maintain instruments, and ensure timely turnaround for routine and STAT tests. EMR data entry and communication with physicians are essential duties.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree required or equivalent with eligibility to take the registry exam.

Responsibilities

  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of body fluids using manual and automated instrumentation.
  • Accurately and completely report results of tests and procedures.
  • Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and ineffective procedures; use alternative methods when appropriate.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment and perform instrument checks, quality control, calibration, and maintenance as required.
  • Meet established turnaround times for routine and STAT tests.
  • Access, input, and retrieve information from the EMR.
  • Communicate with physicians when callback values problems exist.
  • Assist with specimen processing, processing orders and drawing outpatients.
  • Perform glucometer runs and assist with laboratories requests and reports.

Education

Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician
ASCP certification within 1 year of hire

  • Shift: 1st and 2nd shifts available
  • Schedule: Varied start times on 1st shift or 2nd shift
  • Hours per week: 28 - 36

The MLT is responsible for the performance and evaluation of various complex chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic, immunologic, and immunochemical tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by the physician.

  • Perform quantitative and qualitative analysis of body fluids using manual and automated instrumentation.
  • Accurately and completely report results of tests and procedures.
  • Effectively recognize and resolve problems, troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and ineffective procedures, and use alternative methods when appropriate.
  • Effectively maintains laboratory equipment and performs and records instrument checks, quality control procedures, calibration, and other maintenance when required.
  • Meets established turnaround time for routine and STAT tests.
  • Able to access, input, and retrieve information from the EMR.
  • Uses sound judgement and generally accepted medical technology principles when assessing the reliability of results generated.
  • Communicates with physicians when callback values problems exist.
  • Assists with specimen processing, processing orders and drawing outpatients.
  • Performs glucometer run.
  • Adheres to lab cleaning schedule and keeps appropriate log of these activities.
  • Processes reference laboratory requests and reports.
  • Receives and registers via EMR lab requests and specimens from outside sources and takes to proper Laboratory section.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technician or an equivalent combination of education and clinical experience making the employee eligible to take the registry exam.
  • Registration by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists within one year of hire.
  • Requires promptness in answering phone requests, instrument, and out-patient alarms.
  • Requires promptness and efficiency in reporting results of laboratory findings via computer and paper or "call back" results if indicated.
  • Requires the ability to work independently and to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations, and to meet deadlines required by "stats" and routines.
  • Maintain ethical conduct and keep confidential personal and medical information about patients..
  • Must plan, prioritize, and respond to information in an appropriate time frame.
  • Reporting Relationship: Managers and Department Director.
  • Requires promptness and efficiency in reporting results of laboratory findings via computer and paper or "call back" results if indicated.
