Job summary

WellSpan Health in Lebanon, PA is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist (Non-Cert) for the Core Lab on the Evening shift. This role performs a range of routine and specialized testing under supervision and contributes to accurate results in patient care.

The candidate will operate laboratory instruments, perform quality control, and maintain records while supporting safety and process improvement initiatives within the lab team.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Required
  • College Diploma As part of CAP requirements, copy of college diploma and transcript required upon hire.
  • College Transcript As part of CAP requirements, copy of college diploma and transcript required upon hire.
  • Medical technology or a related science. Upon Hire Required.

Responsibilities

  • Performs routine and specialized testing under supervision.
  • Operates laboratory instruments and records results.
  • Performs quality control and instrument checks and maintains related records.
  • Identifies microorganisms in specimens to aid diagnosis.
  • May perform blood typing and compatibility testing.
  • Maintains reagents and stains; trains staff.
  • Communicates with medical staff about laboratory services.
  • Suggests process improvements and participates in safety practices.

Schedule

Full Time, Evening Shift (80 hours biweekly)
Hours: Monday - Friday, 3:00pm - 11:30pm
Rotation: Weekend and holiday rotation

General Summary

Performs a variety of technical and general duties at a basic skills and knowledge level. Functions in one or more laboratory divisions.

Essential Functions
  • Performs routine and/or specialized testing and procedures with supervision as appropriate.
  • Performs a variety of duties at progressively greater skill levels under varying degrees of supervision, records results. May operate a variety of laboratory instruments.
  • Performs quality control and instrument check procedures and maintains related records.
  • Inoculates, cultivates, classifies, and identifies microorganisms found in bodily fluids, exudates, skin scrapings, autopsy and surgical specimens in order to provide data on cause, treatment, and prevention of infectious diseases.
  • May group or type blood of donors and recipients. May determine compatibility of donor blood products with intended recipient.
  • May perform chemical and/or immunological tests to identify and/or quantitate substances found in blood and other body fluids.
  • Counts, describes morphology of, and performs specialized studies on blood and other body fluid cells. Performs coagulation testing.
  • Prepares and maintains reagents, and other solutions and stains according to standard formulas.
  • Trains other employees in day-to-day procedures.
  • May consult with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to laboratory services.
  • Performs surveys and does comparative analyses of work units; may participate in research activities and investigates new products, equipment, techniques, methodologies, and introduces, demonstrates, effects, and recommends as is appropriate.
  • Enters or retrieves data from established computer files.
  • Identifies safety concerns, instrument issues and other opportunities for process improvement, collaborating with others in problem solving.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to patient, visitor, and staff by: complying with all applicable safety regulations; learning the impact of medical errors and methodology that will lead to reduction of errors, reporting actual and potential errors, as well as hazardous conditions; identifying opportunities to standardize processes and "error proof" systems that will lead to increased safety; and participating in safety education programs and root cause analyses as required.
  • Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Provides outstanding service to all customers; fosters teamwork; and practices fiscal responsibility through improvement and innovation.
  • Prepares solutions, reagents, etc. used for testing purposes.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies.
