Endeavor Health is hiring a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) for the Blood Bank at Northwest Community Hospital in Illinois. The role involves high- and moderate-complexity testing, specimen handling, and reporting results with strict adherence to procedures.

It includes teaching responsibilities and potential supervisory duties as needed. Eligibility requires a Bachelor's degree with CLIA qualifications, plus ASCP MLS certification and at least 1 year of Blood Bank experience in a hospital

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and CLIA requirements for moderate to high complexity testing.
• Current MLS/MT (ASCP) registration or equivalent.
• Minimum 1 year MT/MLS Blood Bank experience in a hospital clinical laboratory.

Responsibilities

• Performs high complexity and moderate complexity testing as required.
• Receives and labels blood/specimens; maintains accurate records.
• Performs procedures; records results and notifies supervisor of abnormal findings.
• Maintains equipment and reports malfunctions; performs basic troubleshooting.
• Participates in quality control and quality assurance programs and documentation.
• Assists in training new staff and teaching students or health professionals.

Hourly Pay Range

$30.46 - $45.69 - The hourly pay rate offered is determined by a candidate's expertise and years of experience, among other factors.

Position Highlights

• Position: Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) - Blood Bank
• Location: Northwest Community Hospital
• Full Time/Part Time: Full Time, 32 hours
• Hours: Monday-Friday, 3pm-11:30pm, 4 days a week, rotating weekends and holidays

What you will do:

• Performs high complexity and moderate (if applicable) complexity testing accurately and efficiently. Follows lab procedures carefully.
• Receives blood and other patient specimens. Accurately labels, numbers, and routes specimens and their associated paperwork and computer records.
• Performs laboratory procedures as assigned by the Supervisor; accurately performs routine and special laboratory tests according to procedure manuals and records their results; evaluates test results, including normal and abnormal results which require notification, documentation, and/or verification.
• Maintains operational level of equipment, cleans when needed, and reports all malfunctioning equipment to team facilitator; performs and records maintenance procedures and basic troubleshooting.
• Performs test procedures on quality control specimens, records their results, takes corrective action when indicated, and notifies supervisor when results are out of control; participates in quality assurance programs.
• Updates knowledge of hospital and laboratory information system hardware and software as needed to perform assigned duties; troubleshoots and communicates problems to supervisor.
• Follows all security procedures concerning confidential patient information, both written and computerized.
• Maintains adequate level of supplies, restocks as needed, and notifies supervisor of inventory needs; checks in and documents use of new reagents as needed.
• Participates in teaching of students and other health professionals as required.
• Assumes a supervisory role in appropriate situations or when staffing needs warrant it. Assists in training new employees.
• Communicates problems and suggestions for improvements to section supervisor.
• Assumes responsibility for own professional growth by attending continuing education classes, seminars, and by reading professional journals.
• Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

Education

Bachelor's degree and the requisite courses to meet CLIA requirements for moderate to high complexity testing.

• Certification: Current MLS/MT (ASCP) registration or equivalent.
• Experience: Minimum 1 year MT/MLS Blood Bank experience in a hospital clinical laboratory.
