Purpose:

Provide authority, responsibility, and accountability for the accurate performance of routine and advanced laboratory testing used in diagnosis, treatment, and patient response evaluation. Apply clinical knowledge to ensure accurate testing for quality patient outcomes.

Responsibilities:
  1. Interact courteously and professionally with all laboratory customers; respond promptly to inquiries. Maintain pleasant communication internally and externally.
  2. Adhere to laboratory and hospital policies concerning procedures, quality control, safety, compliance, and personnel policies. Follow established specimen collection and processing procedures, including phlebotomy if required. Perform analytical procedures accurately and efficiently.
  3. Recognize critical, abnormal, or unacceptable results and follow protocols for follow-up. Identify factors affecting measurements and initiate corrective actions. Troubleshoot instrumentation, methodology, or specimen issues as needed.
  4. Operate and maintain equipment within training scope, perform quality control, preventive maintenance, and calibration. Perform minor repairs and manage supplies efficiently.
  5. Maintain in-depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instruments, including their interrelationships and physiological influences on test results.
  6. Assist with test development, methodology evaluation, and equipment selection and implementation.
  7. Perform High Complexity Testing independently as defined by PA DOH.
  8. Temporarily assume first-line supervision of the section/department as delegated.
  9. Train and orient new employees, students, and residents as assigned.
