General Summary
Under general supervision, performs analyses on a variety of sample types. Maintains proper records and utilizes independent judgment to generate acceptable test results. Responsible for quality, efficiency, and safety in the performance of laboratory functions. Serves as a fully effective and participative member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this classification. They are not exhaustive of all duties.
- Independently performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing using manual and automated processes. Complies with all regulatory agency guidelines (CLIA 88, TJC, CAP, FDA, etc.) and addresses concerns as needed.
- Independently identifies and resolves analytical problems, troubleshoots equipment issues, and takes corrective actions in evaluating testing procedures, patient results, and specimen integrity; seeks guidance when necessary.
- Documents corrective actions taken during troubleshooting.
- Reviews and records quality control measures, determining the acceptability of testing, patient results, and instrument function by applying QA/QC principles daily.
- Responds to clinical and customer concerns, resolving issues confidentially with integrity and discretion.
- Attends and leads mandatory education, training, and in-service meetings specific to the department.
- Assists with development and modification of procedures; assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or related sciences, or an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field, or completion of Military Laboratory Technician program with experience.
- 0-1 years of clinical laboratory experience for Bachelor's degree; minimum of 3 years for Associate degree or Military Training.
- ASCP certification or equivalent preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient knowledge of clinical laboratory processes, analytical procedures, and laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic computer skills applicable in a laboratory setting.
- Mathematical and statistical skills for recording and evaluating lab results.
- Ability to handle potentially infectious materials following safety regulations.
- Knowledge to provide appropriate patient care, understanding growth and development across the lifespan, and assessing data relevant to patient needs.
