Overview
Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgment and responsibility in those specialties in which they are qualified by education, training, and experience.
Responsibilities
- Must demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and be proficient troubleshooting all applicable instruments/procedures in the department.
- Provide support to the department in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and completing special projects as assigned.
- Perform and report on assigned analytical tests in accordance with applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), ensuring that quality control requirements are met.
- Support and comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record maintenance.
- Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times, including STATS or critical results reporting.
- Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and, if applicable, opened dates.
- Perform and document QC analysis to ensure data accuracy and proper instrument function, making quality control decisions regarding assays or tests.
- Inform supervisory personnel of all problems related to test procedures.
- Report deviations from standard testing procedures and cooperate with investigations.
- Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for reporting and physician review.
- Maintain a safe, functional, and sanitary laboratory environment.
- Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
- Assist supervisor with training other laboratory personnel.
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and safety requirements, using PPE and controls as directed.
- Respond to questions from clients or lab personnel, if applicable.
- Participate in regulatory inspections as needed.
- In the absence of a supervisor, may assume lead responsibilities if qualified and delegated.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Required Work Experience: One year of full-time experience or training in high complexity testing in a clinical lab setting.
Preferred Work Experience: Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience, with the most recent year in the current department.
Physical and Mental Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry objects from 1 to over 50 pounds with assistance as needed.
- Ability to stand and work at the bench for extended periods.
- Frequent walking and standing.
- Manual dexterity for manual and automated pipetting and laboratory instruments.
Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge in designated specialty.
- Understanding of organizational policies and procedures.
- Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry, or Biology, or an Associate's degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or previous qualification as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433.
- Foreign candidates must provide credential evaluations; U.S.-educated candidates must provide transcripts.
- State-specific requirements may apply depending on certification.
