Job summary

ProMedica’s Defiance Regional Hospital Laboratory is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist for night shifts. This full-time role offers a $10,000 sign-on bonus for external candidates who commit to two years.

You will perform complex tests, evaluate specimens, and provide interpreted results while communicating with health care teams. Responsibilities include maintaining quality control, operating lab instruments, data entry, and mentoring staff.

Qualifications

• Degrees as listed or alternate qualification route for Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing.
• ASCP MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire; certification within one year of hire.

Responsibilities

• Performs testing according to hospital and department policies.
• Processes biological specimens for analysis and resolves issues with specimen collection/processing.
• Performs routine and complex analytical procedures; recognizes deviations and interprets results.
• Operates instruments within training scope and maintains instrument performance.
• Responds to results inquiries; serves as liaison between lab and health care team while maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Reads and inputs data into laboratory information systems; ensures data accuracy and corrective actions are taken.
• Trains new associates and students; assesses competencies of other test performers.
• Completes required CE units and mandatory in-services; maintains professional development.
• Provides guidance to co-workers in the absence of on-site supervision; handles staffing/technical issues.

Education

Bachelor’s/Master’s/Doctoral degree in chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology or transcripts showing required coursework

Job Summary:

$10,000 Sign on Bonus for external candidates with a 2 year commitment

As a Medical Laboratory Scientist, you perform complex lab tests essential for diagnosing, treating and preventing a variety of medical conditions.

You will use critical thinking as you evaluate and solve problems related to biological specimens that you analyze and you will provide interpretation of those tests.

When questions arise regarding results or factors affecting results, you serve as the expert when answering. You also act as a connector to foster effective communication between the lab and health care teams.

ACCOUNTABILITIES

1. Performs testing

a. Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies.

b. Process biological specimens for analysis. Evaluate and solves problems related to specimen collection and processing.

c. Performs routine and complex analytical procedures, recognizes deviations, and provides interpretation.

d. Operates instruments and performs procedures within the scope of training.

a. Performs, records, and maintains accurate quality control records. Recognizes out of control results and takes appropriate actions.

a. Answers inquiries regarding results and factors affecting results. Acts as a liaison and fosters effective communication between laboratory and health care team, maintaining patient confidentiality.

1. Computer System

a. Performs routine inquiry and data input on the laboratory computer systems.

b. Ensures accuracy of information in the computer systems and is responsible for corrective actions.

c. Utilizes computer software to enhance specialty area.

1. Training/Competency Assessment

a. Instructs new associates and students as required.

b. With respect to experience and education, assesses competencies of other test performers.

1. Continuing Education

a. Must complete required number of CE units.

b. Must complete mandatory in-services.

c. Maintains and upgrades personal professional development.

8. Team Leader

a. Provides guidance to co-workers in the absence of an on-site Supervisor regarding staffing and technical issues that arise.

9. Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS

• Doctoral, Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological, clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution, or transcripts showing 60 semester hours from an accredited institution indicating 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses that include 6 semester hours in chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical technology in any combination, OR meet an alternate qualification route for Testing Personnel for High Complexity Testing
• American Society of Pathology (ASCP) MLS or Categorical eligible at time of hire with certification achieved within one year of hire.
