Job description

Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Carnegie, PA – Monday – Friday 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM

Department: Preferred Primary Care Physician Lab

Pay range: Minimum of $33.24+ per hour

Salary offers are based on factors including skills, training, experience, education, and certifications. Successful candidates may be eligible for an annual performance bonus.

Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring the exercise of independent judgement and responsibility in specialties in which they are qualified by education, training, and experience.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all testing areas and troubleshoot applicable instruments/procedures.
  • Provide support in quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement and special projects.
  • Perform and report assigned analytical tests according to SOPs, ensuring quality control requirements are met.
  • Support laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting and record maintenance.
  • Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround time, including STATS or critical results.
  • Verify reagents and test kits for received, expiration, and opened dates.
  • Conduct and document QC analysis to ensure accuracy and instrument function; make quality control decisions.
  • Notify supervisory personnel of all problems related to test procedures.
  • Report any deviations from standard or accepted testing procedures and cooperate with investigations.
  • Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for standardized reporting to physicians.
  • Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition.
  • Complete training and competency checklists as appropriate.
  • Assist supervisor with training of other laboratory personnel.
  • Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA and laboratory safety requirements.
  • Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls and/or work practice controls as directed.
  • Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable.
  • Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed.
  • Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor, if qualified and delegated.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • One (1) year full‑time experience or training in high‑complexity testing in a clinical laboratory setting.
  • Minimum of six years of clinical experience (preferred).
Physical and Mental Requirements
  • Lifting: 1–10 lb frequently; 11–25 lb occasionally; 36–50 lb seldom; >50 lb not lifted without assistance.
  • Stand and work at bench for long periods.
  • Frequent walking and/or standing.
  • Use of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments demanding manual dexterity.
Knowledge
  • Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge in the designated specialty.
  • Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures.
  • BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology, or Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology, or prior qualifying as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433.
  • Foreign‑educated candidates must provide credential evaluation from IERF; US‑educated candidates must provide original transcript.
  • Other state‑specific requirements may apply.

Licenses and Certifications
  • ASCP Certification (preferred).
