Job summary

UNC Health is hiring for Medical Laboratory Scientist I or II in the Core Laboratory at UNC Medical Center, Chapel Hill. This per diem, onsite posting supports a lab with diverse testing areas including Chemistry, Toxicology, Blood Gas, Urinalysis, Coagulation, and Hematology.

The role offers the flexibility of a hybrid recruitment pathway, with varying education/certifications based on the level. MLS II requires MT/MLS certification per degree, and MLS I requires a suitable MLS/MLT credential.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Science, or Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Biological Science, or Associate’s Degree in Clinical/Medical Laboratory Technology.
• No prior professional laboratory experience required.
• MT/MLS certification requirements vary by degree: MT/MLS (ASCP) or MT/MLS (AMT) as applicable.

Responsibilities

• Performs waived/point of care, moderate, and high complexity CLIA testing as appropriate to role and competency.
• Investigates and resolves problems with equipment, test results, specimens, and/or workflow.
• Performs quality control, proficiency testing, and monitors accuracy of testing.
• Prepares reagents and assists in preparation of standard and control materials.
• Monitors reagent inventory and maintains laboratory supplies.
• Reviews test results to ensure accuracy of reporting and timely correction of errors.
• Reports laboratory results and consults with healthcare providers as needed.
• Participates on teams and educates new employees and learners as appropriate.
