Medical Laboratory Scientist II
$10,000 Sign-on Bonus applies to non-University of Maryland Medical System employees
Full-Time; Evening Shift; 2:30pm - 11pm; Monday - Friday + every other weekend
General Summary
Under general supervision, performs analyses on a variety of sample types. Maintains proper records and utilizes independent judgment to generate acceptable test results. Responsible for quality, efficiency, and safety in laboratory functions. Serves as an effective member of the multidisciplinary patient care services team.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks
The following statements describe the general nature and level of work performed by personnel in this classification. They are not exhaustive of all job duties.
- Independently performs waived, moderate, and high complexity testing using manual and automated processes. Complies with all regulatory guidelines (CLIA 88, TJC, CAP, FDA, etc.) and addresses concerns as needed.
- Identifies and resolves analytical problems, troubleshoots equipment issues, and takes corrective actions in testing procedures, patient results, and specimen integrity; seeks guidance when necessary.
- Troubleshoots and resolves problems independently and documents corrective actions.
- Reviews and records quality control, determining the acceptability of testing, patient results, and instrument function by applying QA/QC principles daily.
- Responds to clinical and customer concerns, resolving issues confidentially with integrity and discretion.
- Attends and leads mandatory education, training, and in-service meetings specific to the department.
- Assists with procedure development and modification; assumes additional responsibilities as appropriate.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Biology, or related sciences, or an Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field, or completion of Military Laboratory Technician program with experience.
- 0-1 years (bachelor’s degree) preferred; minimum of 3 years of clinical laboratory experience (Associate in MLT or related science or Military Training) required.
- ASCP or equivalent certification preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient knowledge of laboratory processes, analytical procedures, and equipment maintenance and calibration.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Basic computer skills applicable in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to perform mathematical and statistical operations accurately.
- Knowledge of safety regulations for handling potentially infectious materials.
- Understanding of patient care principles, growth and development, and ability to assess data relevant to patient needs across the lifespan.
