Job summary

UPMC Chautauqua seeks a full-time Medical Lab Scientist to work across a broad range of tests in a busy lab, growing as a generalist. You will join a collaborative team, enjoy a sign-on bonus, and participate in regular weekend/holiday rotations while advancing your skills.

You will handle specimen collection, perform analyses, and ensure timely, accurate results that directly influence patient care. This role offers opportunities for teaching and mentorship within a supportive environment.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science degree with MLS program or equivalent
• ASCP or equivalent cert is preferred
• New York licensure for NY locations is required/preferred

Responsibilities

• Follow specimen collection protocols including phlebotomy and processing
• Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures with accuracy
• Recognize critical/abnormal/unacceptable results and follow protocols
• Operate and maintain lab equipment and perform QC checks
• Maintain knowledge of testing techniques and instruments
• Train and orient new staff and students
• Interact professionally with laboratory customers and respond to inquiries
• Adhere to hospital and lab policies on procedures, quality control, safety, and compliance

In this role, there is the opportunity to -

• Follow protocols for specimen collection, including phlebotomy, processing, and ensuring sample stability.
• Perform qualitative and quantitative analytical procedures with precision, accuracy, and efficiency.
• Recognize critical, abnormal, and unacceptable test results, following up according to established protocols.
• Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, performing quality control checks, maintenance, and minor repairs.
• Maintain in-depth knowledge of testing techniques, instruments, and factors affecting test results.
• Train and orient new employees, students, and residents, ensuring proper understanding of laboratory procedures.
• Interact with laboratory customers courteously and professionally, responding to inquiries in a timely manner.
• Adhere to established laboratory and hospital policies regarding procedures, quality control, safety, and compliance.

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university AND successful completion of an accredited Medical Lab Scientist program, OR
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, or clinical laboratory science AND ASCP or equivalent categorical or MLT certification, OR
• Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical, or clinical laboratory science AND at least two years' experience in a role equivalent to that of a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) in a clinical laboratory.

Preferred

• Experience in a hospital laboratory
• Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory information systems

Licensure, Certifications, And Clearances

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) (ASCP) or equivalent certification preferred. New York License required for NY locations.
