Job summary

MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Scientist for an evening shift (3pm–11:30pm) with weekend rotation. The role spans waived to high-complexity testing under CLIA, evaluating and reporting results used in patient care.

You will prepare specimens, run assays, ensure data validity, perform quality control, train new staff, and help develop procedures to improve departmental efficiency. Strong English communication and confidentiality are essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, required.
  • 1-2 years MLS experience in a clinical lab (chemistry, hematology, blood bank, micro) required.
  • Certified Medical Lab Scientist (ASCP) or equivalent preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as SME and knowledge resource for the lab.
  • Prepare specimens for routine assays.
  • Run laboratory assays and analyze results.
  • Review results for accuracy and interpret data.
  • Ensure proper specimen handling and inventory.
  • Perform quality control and proficiency testing.
  • Enter results into client reports and manage turnaround times.
  • Assist and train new technical staff.
  • Contribute to new procedures and department improvements.

About the Job

This is an evening shift role, working hours will be 3pm - 11:30pm with a weekend rotation.

General Summary of Position

Performs a variety of laboratory testing from waived to high complexity per Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA). Will work in one or more laboratory sections. Evaluates and reports results for use in patient diagnosis and treatment.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Subject Matter Expert (SME) and knowledge resource for lab.
  • Prepare specimens for routine laboratory assays.
  • Run laboratory assays and analysis.
  • Review and verifies results to ensure data validity and interprets results.
  • Apply appropriate procedural techniques related to specimen procurement and handling instrument operation operator maintenance application of universal precautions and inventory monitoring.
  • Perform and document quality control procedures and proficiency testing in accordance with established parameters and standards.
  • Accurately enter assay results into client reports
  • Resolve validity issues and amend reports.
  • Provide phlebotomy and other specimen collection.
  • Ensure client turnaround times (TATs) are met.
  • Fill all reagents needed and document quality control information for equipment used
  • Prepare equipment for next shift (fill reagents run controls etc.).
  • Document and report problems to supervisor.
  • Clean and stock supplies in work area.
  • Enter and track client sample and result information.
  • Perform maintenance procedures as directed.
  • Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and abnormal test results.
  • Assist and train new technical staff.
  • Assist in development of new procedures and protocols to improve efficiency of department. Act as a resource for the department other departments other labs and client inquiries.
  • Can manage the department in the absence of the supervisor. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimal Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field, required.
Experience
  • 1-2 years previous MLS experience in comparable clinical laboratory setting, including chemistry, hematology, blood bank and micro set up is required.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Certified Medical Lab Scientist-ASCP or equivalent, preferred.

  • Ability to comprehend and follow the policies and procedures for MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.
  • Ability to read write and speak or communicate in English to successfully accomplish the essential duties of the position.
