Job summary

MedStar Health in Maryland is seeking a Medical Laboratory Scientist for the night shift (11:00 PM–7:30 AM) with weekend rotation. Initial training will occur on day shift for about four weeks before transitioning to overnight hours.

You will perform specimen testing across hematology, coagulation, chemistry, UA, and blood bank, document QC/QA, provide expert technical guidance, and participate in education of students and new staff.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a closely related field is required.
  • Less than one year of clinical laboratory training/experience is required.
  • Certified Medical Lab Scientist - ASCP or equivalent certification is required (waived for Master's or higher; or for 3+ years in designated specialty).

Responsibilities

  • Evaluates specimen adequacy for test performance and collects specimens for analyses.
  • Performs routine and specialized testing, correlates findings with disease stage, and verifies abnormal results.
  • Reviews and verifies test results, documents appropriately, and considers sample integrity and QC before releasing results.
  • Performs daily quality control and quality assurance measures and escalates issues to supervisor.
  • Analyzes technical problems with specimen collection and instrumentation, and maintains reagents and supplies to prevent delays.
  • Maintains clean, organized work area and decontaminates surfaces per protocol.
  • Ensures turnaround time standards are met and communicates variances to supervisor.
  • Participates in education and training of students and new staff.
  • Maintains individual competency and supports department competency requirements.
  • Provides technical advice and support to laboratory personnel and communicates pertinent information to next shift.
  • Demonstrates troubleshooting skills.

About the Job

Working hours will be 11pm - 7:30am, including a weekend rotation. Initial mandatory training will occur on day shift for approximately 4 weeks until transitioning to overnight shift.

Performs specimen testing and analysis on patient samples to aid the clinician in diagnosis and treatment. Ensures that all quality control, quality assurance and equipment maintenance is documented and maintained according to standards. Provides exceptional customer service as needed. Serves as a knowledge expert and technical consultant in the areas of hematology, coagulation, UA, chemistry and blood bank.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Evaluates specimen adequacy for test performance; obtains specimens for quantitative and qualitative analyses.
  2. Performs routine and specialized testing in assigned area. Correlates laboratory findings with disease stage, integrates and relates data from other laboratory specialty areas. Confirms abnormal results and specimen discrepancies and institutes correct follow-up procedures.
  3. Reviews/verifies test results, recognizes and follows through on abnormal/unusual results and communicates same to appropriate personnel. Accurately completes all required documentation. Utilizes judgment and discretion in considering sample integrity, process calibration, reagent concentration and stability, quality control prior to releasing testing results. relationship to unknown results, evaluation of unexpected patient results and error identification.
  4. Performs and documents daily quality control and quality assurance measures to assure that tolerance limits are not exceeded. Advises supervisor of quality assurance/quality control problems. Evaluates CAP and other survey proficiency testing materials as required.
  5. Analyzes technical problems pertaining to collection of specimens and instrumentation. Determines cause and rectifies problems in accordance with guidelines and procedures. Maintains adequate reagents/supplies in the work area and/or on the instruments to avoid delay in sample processing.

Decontaminates counter surfaces, instruments, computers, telephones and general work area according to laboratory protocol.
  7. Ensures that turnaround time standards are met within lab section. Communicates any variances to supervisor in a timely manner.
  8. Participates in the education and training of students and new employees.
  9. Maintains individual competency as scheduled
  10. Assists with department competency requirements such as performing training, assessments, or direct observations as delegated by the medical director
  11. Provides technical advice and support to other laboratory personnel as required.
  12. Informs next shift of pertinent information to maintain efficient operation.
  13. Demonstrates simple/complex troubleshooting skills
Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or a closely related field such as chemical or biological science, required.

Experience:

Less than one year of clinical laboratory training and or experience, required.

Certifications:

Certified Medical Lab Scientist - ASCP or equivalent certification, required.

(Certification requirement waived for individuals holding a Master's Degree or higher in chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or a closely related field. Certification waived for applicants with a minimum of 3 years experience in designated specialty.)

This position has a hiring range of

USD $35.68 - USD $64.71 /Hr.
