Job Description:

The Medical Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supporting pre-analytical and post-analytical functions within Essentia Health Laboratories.
The MLA promotes patient safety during specimen collection and processing and performs waived lab testing according to accreditation standards and state licensure requirements.

Educational Qualifications:

• Graduate from Medical Laboratory Assistant Program
• OR completes an internal Medical Laboratory Assistant training program within 1 year of hire

Key Responsibilities:

• Collect specimens through venipuncture or capillary skin puncture and other miscellaneous specimens (Urine, swabs, etc.)
• Perform specimen processing and handling according to testing requirements
• Conduct laboratory testing in compliance with accreditation and licensure standards
• Participate in training of new employees, students, and personnel as appropriate
• Follow Essentia Health policies to ensure safety and quality

Preferred Qualifications:

• Phlebotomy or Medical Laboratory Assistant ASCP certification
• Recent experience in specimen preparation and processing
• Valid motor vehicle operator’s license
• Knowledge of medical terminology and basic computer skills
