Job summary

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician for an Urgent Care setting. Under supervision you will support clinical services, help maintain patient flow, and ensure accurate lab results.

Essential duties include performing lab procedures, maintaining instruments, applying professional judgment, and reporting critical findings to providers. Travel and CPR/training within 45 days are required.

Qualifications

• Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program with an Associates degree.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, mathematics, hematology and serology.
• Interpersonal skills to communicate with physicians, nursing personnel and clinicians while reporting results.
• Familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures to resolve technical problems.
• Analytical skills to interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical results.
• Knowledge and experience performing phlebotomy.
• Ability to travel.
• CPR training required within 45 days of hire.
• Diploma or transcript for lab or point-of-care testing.

Job description

The Medical Lab Technician - Urgent Care is responsible for following established policies, procedures and regulations. Under supervision, supports and assists with the provision of identified clinical services to enhance and maintain patient flow, services and satisfaction. Reports to department leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs, assists and accountable for various clinical laboratory test procedures.
• Ensures proper maintenance and operation of instrumentation.
• Exercises professional judgment in the performance of laboratory procedures.
• Provides patient care essential to laboratory procedures.
• Recognizes patient conditions requiring immediate action and reports to provider.
• Performs other duties and tasks as assigned.

LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS

• Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the Board of Registry of American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or National Certification Agency (NCA) required.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Completion of an accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program that typically results in the acquisition of an Associates degree.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, chemistry, mathematics, hematology and serology at a level normally acquired through completion of an accredited program (National Commission for health Certifying Agencies) with supervised clinical internship.
• Interpersonal skills necessary in order to communicate effectively with physicians, nursing personnel and other clinicians while exchanging information to routine inquiries and reporting laboratory results.
• Familiar with a variety of laboratory testing procedures to resolve technical problems.
• Analytical skills necessary in order to interpret routine tests and recognize abnormal/critical/atypical test results and take the appropriate course of action. Standard guides and procedures are used in resolving technical problems.
• Knowledge and experience preforming phlebotomy required.
• Ability to travel.
• CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire for identified individuals in job role.
• Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing laboratory or point of care testing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Laboratory Services area work environment with frequent exposure to physical discomforts due to unpleasant odors from specimens and chemicals. Frequent exposure to infectious agents when handling specimens or hazardous materials. Potential for personal harm or injury is reduced when proper safety and health precautions are followed.
