Job summary

Johnston-Willis Hospital in Richmond, VA, seeks a Medical Laboratory Technician to join its clinical laboratory. You will follow general lab policies, perform duties with minimal supervision, and participate in competency testing and ongoing education.

Qualifications

  • Registry within 12 months of hire; ASCP or AMT accepted.
  • Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required.

Responsibilities

  • Reviews all posted policy changes and adheres to regulatory guidelines.
  • Directs staff in tech-in-charge duties when necessary.
  • Maintains competency and completes annual training.
  • Assists with specimen receiving and inventory as needed.
  • Organizes daily tasks, troubleshoots instruments, and documents actions.
  • Ensures quality control is performed, logged, and actions taken.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and safety checks per schedule.
  • Trains new employees on lab policies and procedures.
  • Communicates patient data appropriately for different ages.

Job Summary And Qualifications
  • Knows, understands, and puts into practice general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures. Reviews all posted policy changes as required. Adheres to all regulatory guidelines.
  • Demonstrates the ability to assess a situation, consider the options, and formulate an appropriate course of action. Recognizes and performs duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision. Possess the ability to assume and carry out “tech-in-charge” duties, including the ability to direct the activities of staff or functions, when necessary.
  • Demonstrate initial and annual competency in all appropriate designated lab sections within set deadlines. Accurately performs proficiency testing when scheduled. Participates in continuing education activities.
  • Participates in all facility/corporate mandatory annual training within set deadlines.
  • Is cooperative in assisting the laboratory team in the completion of miscellaneous duties. This includes specimen receiving and putting away supplies when received in the department.
  • Effectively organizes and completes daily tasks in assigned area{s}.
  • Effectively troubleshoots/resolves instrument problems and documents corrective action in appropriate log; when necessary, performs instrumentation repairs. Effectively investigates/resolves specimen collection problems using Outstanding Specimen Report (OSR) and specimen tracking tool when appropriate.
  • Assures quality control is properly performed and logged, works within quality control limits and trends, and follows proper department procedure for corrective action.
  • Preventative maintenance and safety checks of equipment are performed and documented according to schedule.
  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills to train new employees and/or students in general lab policies/procedures as well as department/section specific policies/procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skill necessary to communicate with, provide care for, and assess data appropriate to the age of the patient served.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and adheres to all policies relating to the JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals for the Laboratory, including, but not limited to critical call read back and patient identification.
Experience
  • Preferred - Experience as Medical Laboratory Technician
EDUCATION
  • Required - Associates Degree in Medical Technology, Biological, Chemical or Physical Science. Nursing Degree will be considered with the required CLIA acceptable courses.
  • Preferred - Associates Degree in Medical Technology or Laboratory Science
CERTIFICATION
  • Required- Successful completion of registry within 12 months of hire for anyone with a hire date of or after 1.1.2005. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required. ASCP or AMT accepted.
  • Acceptable - Registry/Licensure in a specialty area will be considered.
  • Preferred- ASCP/AMT/NCA/HEW. Continuing education to maintain registry/licensure as required.
